Elon Musk: Starship is achieving something that's physically barely possible. “We're pushing the limits of physics here. Starship is the first time that there is a design for a rocket where full and rapid reusability is actually possible. There's not even been a design before where it was possible.... Certainly not a design that got made into any hardware at all. We live on a planet where the gravity is quite high. Earth's gravity is really quite high. And if the gravity were even 10% or 20% higher, we'd be stuck on Earth forever. We certainly couldn't use conventional rockets. You'd have to blow yourself off the surface with a nuclear bomb, or something crazy. So, on the other hand, if Earth's gravity was just a little lower, like even 10%, 20% lower, then getting to orbit would be easy. If this was a video game, it's set to maximum difficulty, but not impossible.” The Joe Rogan Experience, October 31, 2025show more

Elon Musk on Starship: "If there are historians in the future, they will look back at Starship and say it was one of the most profound things that ever happened. The degree to which a Starship is a revolutionary technology is not well understood in the world. It's the first time that there's been any rocket design where full and rapid reusability is possible. This is the first design where success is in the set of possible outcomes. There were a lot of performance improvements for v3 so it made sense to go to v3, there's like 10,000 different changes between v2 and v3. There just aren't very many things that are in the top 10 of the evolution of life. So if there were to be a catastrophe on one of the planets, the other planet would survive and no AI was used to create it."

Here's Elon Musk in 2011 announcing he believes full and rapidly reusable rockets are achievable. “The pivotal breakthrough that some company has to come up with to make life multiplanetary is a fully and rapidly reusable orbit-class rocket. This is a very difficult thing to do because we live on a planet where that is just barely possible. If gravity were a little lower, it would be easy. If it was a little higher, it would be impossible. It's just a very tough engineering problem. I wasn't sure it could be solved for a while. But then, relatively recently, in the last twelve months or so, I've come to the conclusion that it can be solved. SpaceX is going to try to do it. We could fail. I'm not saying we're certain of success, but we're going to try to do it. We have a design that, on paper, doing the calculations, doing the simulations, does work. We need to make sure that those simulations and reality agree, because generally when they don't, reality wins.” National Press Club, 2011

Elon Musk just described the most expensive mistake in engineering history. It lasted 70 years. Musk: “If we had to throw away airplanes every time we flew, flying would be far too expensive and basically no one would be flying airplanes.” That wasn’t a thought experiment. That was the actual business model of spaceflight since 1957. Build a rocket worth billions. Fly it once. Let the ocean swallow it. Then start over from nothing. Ships are reusable. Trains are reusable. Cars are reusable. Planes are reusable. If it can’t fly twice, it’s not transportation. It’s a stunt. For seven decades, spaceflight was a stunt. Musk: “Earth has a deep gravity well and a thick atmosphere, and these make it just barely possible to achieve reusability with a rocket.” Barely possible means it was always possible. The gravity was always light enough. The atmosphere was always thin enough. The margin was always there. “Barely possible” was rounded down to impossible. The entire industry believed the rounding, not the math. Musk: “It’s the first rocket design that is capable of full and rapid reusability. You simply cannot send this to the moon, to Mars, and to the rest of the solar system without a reusable rocket.” Every single-use rocket was a vote to stay grounded. For 70 years, the vote was unanimous. Starship didn’t break a law of physics. It proved “impossible” was a policy, not a constraint.

Elon Musk: Starship is next-level. It's the first rocket that can take us to Mars. “Starship is the most complex and advanced rocket that's ever been made by, I don't know, an order of magnitude or something like that. It's a lot. It's really next-level. The fundamental optimization of Starship is minimizing cost per ton to orbit and ultimately cost per ton to the surface of Mars. This may seem like a mercantile objective, but it is actually the thing that needs to be optimized. There is a certain cost per ton to the surface of Mars where we can afford to establish a self-sustaining city, and then above that we cannot afford to do it. Right now, you couldn't fly to Mars for a trillion dollars. No amount of money could get you a ticket to Mars. So, we need to get that to something that is actually possible at all.” From: Interview with Lex Fridman, December 28, 2021

Elon Musk: Starship is the most complicated machine ever made by humans, by a long shot. Anything, really. There isn't a more complex machine... Any technical problem, even like a Hadron Collider or something like that, is an easier problem than this. And that full reusability is what will enable us to become a multi-planet civilization. And we haven't succeeded yet. Falcon is partially reusable, but the upper stage is not. Starship version 3, I think this design it can be fully reusable. And that full reusability is what will enable us to become a multi-planet civilization. Any technical problem, even like a Hadron Collider or something like that.

Elon to Joe Rogan: “We deliberately ripped heat-shield tiles off Starship in the worst places, flew it back at 17,000 mph like a flaming skyscraper — 25× the speed of sound — and it STILL nailed a soft landing with holes burned clean through the steel.” Then he drops the real bomb: “Earth’s gravity is basically set to MAX difficulty. 10–20% higher and humanity would be trapped here forever. Starship is the first rocket ever designed where full reuse is actually possible. When we crack it next year, cost to orbit falls 100×–1000×.” 33 new Raptor 3 engines on the booster. Each one makes almost 10× the thrust of a 747 engine but looks like parts are missing because it’s THAT simplified. Hot-staging = the ship rips away while the booster is still blasting fire straight at it. SpaceX already launches ~90% of everything Earth sends to orbit this year… and Starship is just getting started. We’re watching the exact moment space travel stops being “rocket science” and becomes aviation. 10-minute clip below — sound on, prepare to have your mind blown twice in the first 60 seconds

Elon Musk perfectly explains why fully reusable orbital rockets are insanely hard to build Our Earth has quite strong gravity and thick atmosphere. With known physics, building a fully reusable orbital rocket is only barely possible "If this was a video game, the setting is 'Extreme Difficulty.' Not impossible, but extreme difficulty" Because the physics are so unforgiving, everything has to be perfect. You can't just have a "good" rocket You need: • Exceptionally efficient engines • An incredibly optimized, lightweight structure • Advanced avionics and software • A revolutionary, ultra-light heat shield for orbital reentry There is zero margin for error. This is why making life multi-planetary is the hardest engineering challenge in human history

The curtains are being pulled back Joe Rogan “Essentially DOGE has found the coffin where the vampire sleeps” Elon Musk “We're reprogramming the matrix. Success was never one of the possible outcomes — If you're in the matrix, success was never possible. The only way to achieve success is to reprogram the matrix such that success is one of the possible outcomes. That's what we're doing. We may or may not succeed.” Joe Rogan “Well, it's certainly a lot of fun to watch.”

ELON: WE WANT EARTH TO BE GREAT BUT WE ALSO NEED TO SAFEGUARD CONSCIOUSNESS “This is the first time in Earth's 4.5 billion year history that it's been possible to extend life or consciousness beyond Earth. And we've got to do that while civilization is still strong. That's the overarching goal of the company, is extending life sustainably to another planet and to do so ideally before World War III or some kind of bad thing. The key thing is that we need enough people and enough tonnage on Mars such that Mars can survive and continue consciousness even if something were to happen to Earth. Obviously, I'm not talking about abandoning Earth or anything like that. We want Earth to be as good as possible for as long as possible. But there are certain things that may be outside our control. So we want to just get Mars to be a self-sustaining civilization as quickly as possible.” Source: SpaceX Update, April 2024

Elon on Starship: “It’s going to revolutionize space. Reusability is essential to make life multi-planetary and to ascend the Kardeshev scale; You gotta go a step beyond that and make it rapidly reusable. This is the first time there has ever been a rocket where that is possible. That is what makes Starship so profound. By (Starship) version 4, we’ll be 3x the thirst of the Saturn V rocket. We expect Starship to be flying more than once per hour down the road.”
