His work helped lay the foundations for the deep-learning systems now powering today’s AI boom. AI is moving fast (faster than regulation and public understanding). What worries Yoshua isn’t progress itself. It’s how quickly powerful systems are being deployed without a clear way to align them with human values, or to control what happens when they behave in unexpected ways.

Government’s job isn’t to play, it’s to make sure the field is fair and the rules make sense. But over time, he said, the system got crowded with too many referees and not enough players: "Government’s role is really to ensure that the playing field is a good playing field. That the rules are good rules. Government is essentially the football league, the referee, making sure that there’s fair play. What happens over time though is government keeps growing, and at a certain point, you have more referees than players on the field, and then the game is not good. I’m not saying you don’t need referees, but you don’t want the referees to outnumber the players. That would be silly. Just make sure fair games are being played with sensible rules, and don’t get in the way of the players. The results will be excellent." Source: Lacey
