Emerging data from clinical trials points to potentially powerful use of psilocybin for the treatment of depression and certain forms of addiction, and perhaps compulsive disorders, too. One of the key questions to arise from those studies is: "what is the relationship between the actual journey (the subjective experience... show more

I think it was Michael Pollan in the Netflix doc who compared the brain to a snow-covered mountain with deep ski tracks that represent our habits and thought processes. And hallucinogens are like a fresh snowfall that covers the tracks and lets us start anew.

People always thinking we need to "remove the experience" in order to "extract" only the post-benefit Nothing wrong with something being enjoyable every now and then, smiles are medicinal too Besides, almost universally people say their rare "bad trip" was very beneficial

fantastic podcast. One question on the adverse events in the high dose psilocybin trials on depressed patients. Is it fair to say that suicidal ideation in this case is a negative event? Isn’t the point of these therapies for the patient to come face to face with their trauma - and in this population that is very often thoughts of suicide. My understanding is thoughts of suicide need to be marked down as adverse, but isn’t arising those thoughts in a safe space the point of the therapy? And often those same people who experienced those ideations during the therapy reported long term remission of depression (and suicidal thoughts?)

I can't wait to sit down and listen to this full episode.

The SSRIs appeared to be super-effective and safe until we eventually learned that this isn’t the case. I’m just saying be aware that we don’t yet know the true benefits vs risks of psilocybin. SSRIs have left a long trail of harm and suicide that is only now becoming apparent.

Absolutely agree. I have autism, Asperger's to be specific. Psychedelics help tremendously with emotion regulation. They help me make better sense of my thoughts and emotions thus I'm better able to communicate and live with a little less stress and frustration ❤️

Love this. Gonna check this out soon.

Lots's of good points about habitual nature of emotional states. They can be simply lifted from surrounding network like ChatGPT lifts up language patterns from the pool of data. We agree. But chemical infusion can only temporary break emotional state, through external ...
