Russians complain about growing prices for groceries and commonly used stuff. Inflation in Russia continues its growth as Putin throws more and more money into the war. ◾️ In November, the official (monthly) inflation in Russia amounted to 1.5%, and in December, according to all forecasts, it should be more than 2%. If this trend continues, the official annual inflation alone will amount to 20-30%, Russian economist Shiryaev notes. ◾️ At the same time, real consumer inflation (i.e., the one customers see in stores) may be even higher. According to Russia's ROMIR Human Institute, which published data on consumer inflation until September 2024, it is three times higher than official inflation. ◾️High inflation is related to the Russian Central Bank's actions. "The Central Bank has already stopped raising the key rate. This is pushing up inflation even more because inflation expectations [i.e., fear of rising prices] have now skyrocketed," Shiryaev says. "Therefore, growth of 75% for everything is a working forecast. Not pessimistic or optimistic, but working," Shiryaev insists.

🇺🇸 THE FED IS EXPECTED TO HIKE RATES And this is bad for markets. Just a few months ago, everyone was convinced rate cuts were coming. That “flippening” in expectations has completely shifted the liquidity narrative. The next FOMC meeting on June 17th is also the first under new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh. Markets don’t yet have full clarity on how he will prioritize growth vs inflation. The reason for a possible hike is simple: the U.S. economy remains stronger than expected. Job growth is holding up, consumer demand is resilient, and inflation is still running above the Fed’s target. For the Fed, persistent inflation means less urgency to cut rates, and more reason to keep financial conditions tight. Higher rates make borrowing more expensive, slow spending, increase costs for businesses, and pressure stock valuations. Markets thrive on liquidity. The Annual Dinner of Edo Zone Bankers’ Committee presented an opportunity for me to elaborate on this very crucial issue and the need to focus on fundamentals that will enhance production. Our monetary policy formulators should have a rethink.

Russian MP Mikhail Delyagin called lowering the key rate a matter of survival for Russia. He criticized the Central Bank’s policy, saying that trying to stifle inflation caused by non-monetary factors with high interest rates is like "treating a broken bone with antibiotics." Delyagin stressed that expanding production and attracting investment would help bring inflation down, but because of the Central Bank’s signals, businesses are now simply freezing projects.

I do not show up and say the secret to inflation is if we only knew M2 everything would be swell. But monetary aggregates had been taken out of the monetary policy report probably about a decade ago, maybe a bit longer. My view is that a modern central banker should have a mosaic of information and should not be allergic to any data that happens to be inconsistent with dogma that he or she might have been taught in econ one. I have this old fashioned view that monetary policy has something to do with money."
