The State Duma criticized the head of the Russian Central Bank Deputy Sergei Mironov questioned the competence of Elvira Nabiullina, accusing her of “sabotage” and claiming that raising the key interest rate is “crippling the economy.” According to Bloomberg, Nabiullina wanted to resign after the full-scale war in Ukraine began, but Putin did not allow her to leave. So it seems the former Russian TV editor living in Switzerland was wrong. What a shock! Elvira Nabiullina has reappeared, alive and working, giving a standard Central Bank statement on inflation risks and monetary policy. She also cut interest rates by 0.25%. The “house arrest / murder / mass mobilisation / Russia invades NATO before summer 2027” theory has aged exactly as expected.

“The plain fact is that inflation is too high and has been for too long,” Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said Wednesday after the central bank raised interest rates by one quarter of a percentage point. Warsh said "the labor side of the Fed’s congressional remit is in good shape,” leaving the central bank’s “predominant focus” on restoring price stability.

Central banks keep warning about inflation risk. The data keeps saying the opposite. Japan, Canada, UK, Australia, four different central banks, four different policy paths. And yet core inflation is decelerating in every single one of them. Canada cut rates to two and a quarter percent over a year ago and just left it there. Core prices kept falling anyway. The UK central bank keeps talking up inflation risk. Its own core rate keeps softening regardless. If rate policy actually drove inflation, these paths would not all be converging on the same answer. They are converging because it was never about central bank policy in the first place. It is about fragile economies absorbing an energy shock. That is not an inflation signal. That is a growth signal.
