Another heartbreaking policy failure in Seattle. Just walked Cheasty Park with Timothy Emerson and found makeshift cabins, massive trash piles, hoarded junk, fire damage, and a young girl stuck languishing in a tent. This greenbelt is also a blatant illegal dumping ground. Parks are for people not encampments. Enforce the laws, ban camping in public spaces, and prioritize real treatment over enabling chaos. Lewis Park just shut down for restoration, and the entire drug market, dealing, using, loitering, squatting, and sleeping immediately moved across the street to Dr. Jose Rizal Park, the bus shelters, and 12th & Jackson (which has now quadrupled). Most people are already saying it’ll be right back in a week. There’s simply not enough enforcement. On Wednesday, I told you about an Asian American woman who was cleared out during the massive Fred Meyer sweep. I've learned this young woman's name is Juliana and she's 27 years old. NEW: Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood is turning into another human dumping ground. Seven Hills Park is covered with more than a dozen tents. Lots of couples in their 20's with dogs running wild. We Heart Seattle's(We Heart Seattle) Andrea Suarez is doing outreach this weekend but says this is the "service resistant" crowd. People are turning down services from the city and nothing is being done about it. Don't believe the homeless industrial complex when they say all these people just need housing. One guy here has a tiny house but comes back to pitch a tent to hang out with his homies. Another fella can go home but has to address his drug addiction. Once again, the root causes fueling the street crisis are mental illness, drug addiction, and broken relationships. Btw, just in the past five years I have watched the city clear this park numerous times. But the Harrell administration(Mayor Katie B. Wilson) is struggling to prevent sites from re-populating across the city.
