In the Rajya Sabha today, I addressed key questions on coal exchange, coal gasification, and mine closure reforms. Under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Government of India has brought greater transparency and efficiency to the allocation of coal blocks through open auctions. Today, nearly 73–74% of India’s power generation comes from coal-based thermal plants, with around 80% of the coal produced being supplied to the power sector. Critical industries such as cement, steel, and fertilisers also depend heavily on coal. India holds the world’s fifth-largest coal reserves, sufficient to meet our needs for the next 60–70 years. We are further strengthening this position by accelerating exploration activities. Today, India is the second-largest coal producer globally, and Coal India Limited remains the largest coal-producing company in the world. We have also made significant progress in coal gasification, with projects worth over ₹64,000 crore underway. Highlighted that there are two types of gasification — surface and underground. We are actively advancing surface gasification, while underground gasification technologies are being carefully studied. I will share further updates once these are finalised. On mine closure, 143 coal mines are currently undergoing scientific closure processes. Dedicated nodal officers have been appointed for each site, with oversight committees led by respective district collectors. Pallone: Trump keeps saying, “Well, I don’t like the way solar panels look. I don’t like the way windmills look.” What the hell does that have to do with what we need to do in an energy crisis? The price of electricity keeps going up. And so they’ve taken the position—because of Trump—that they’re either going to eliminate renewables like solar or wind altogether, or they’re going to make them not a priority. That’s not based on what’s important for the American people—keeping energy affordable. If you don’t have an all-of-the-above energy policy that says, “Look, we need more energy, and we’re going to use nuclear, we’re going to use renewables, we’re going to use fossil fuels,” then you’re cutting off major sources of new energy generation, and prices are going to go through the roof. And then there’s the environmental aspect, because renewables don’t create the kinds of environmental problems that burning oil, gas, or coal does. I mean, one of the bills yesterday was to try to bring back coal in all its glory. Well, the price of coal is already so high that it would send electricity bills through the roof if you had to buy and burn it—not to mention the environmental damage.

The gas explosion occurred at the Liushenyu ​coal mine in Qinyuan county, Shanxi province on Friday. 247 workers were underground. At least 90 dead. These are not numbers. They are fathers, sons, husbands, workers who went down into the earth to keep the country running. Coal built much of China’s industrial rise. But every ton of energy carries human weight. No infrastructure, no growth, no national project is worth forgetting the people at the bottom of the system — the ones who enter the dark so the rest of the country can have light. I hope every trapped worker is found. I hope every responsible person is held accountable. And I hope China never treats this as just another accident. A great nation is not measured only by how much power it generates, but by how fiercely it protects the hands that produce it.

India’s economy rests on three pillars: agriculture, industry, and services. The backbone of all three is electricity. At present, around 70% of India’s electricity comes from coal, with much of the quality coal imported from Indonesia. This costs the country roughly Rs 12,000 crore annually. To achieve self-reliance, India must develop domestic energy sources. India possesses vast reserves of thorium—around 85% of the world’s supply—enough to generate 5,000 units of electricity per person per year for 500 years, compared to the current 1,000 units. Yet nuclear energy faces public resistance due to misconceptions and fear. As a result, nuclear projects are often delayed for a decade or more. I completed my PhD in 2008 at Rajasthan University, studying the impact of nuclear power plants on regional economies, welfare, and health. In 2009, I undertook postdoctoral training with India’s Department of Atomic Energy in Mumbai... Since 2011, after the Fukushima disaster, I have worked to raise awareness and reduce opposition to nuclear energy across states, including Haryana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. Currently, India operates 23 reactors using uranium, imported from countries such as Australia and Mongolia. Uranium is a fissile element, and its by-product, plutonium, can also be used as fuel. India’s fast breeder reactor programme now utilises plutonium, and when combined with thorium, it can be converted into uranium-233, a powerful fissile material. This opens the door to smaller reactors and long-term energy independence, potentially supplying India with abundant electricity for years."

At present, around 70% of India’s electricity comes from coal, with much of the quality coal imported from Indonesia. This costs the country roughly Rs 12,000 crore annually. To achieve self-reliance, India must develop domestic energy sources. India possesses vast reserves of thorium—around 85% of the world’s supply—enough to generate 5,000 units of electricity per person per year for 500 years, compared to the current 1,000 units. Yet nuclear energy faces public resistance due to misconceptions and fear. As a result, nuclear projects are often delayed for a decade or more. I completed my PhD in 2008 at Rajasthan University, studying the impact of nuclear power plants on regional economies, welfare, and health. In 2009, I undertook postdoctoral training with India’s Department of Atomic Energy in Mumbai... Since 2011, after the Fukushima disaster, I have worked to raise awareness and reduce opposition to nuclear energy across states, including Haryana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. Currently, India operates 23 reactors using uranium, imported from countries such as Australia and Mongolia. Uranium is a fissile element, and its by-product, plutonium, can also be used as fuel. India’s fast breeder reactor programme now utilises plutonium, and when combined with thorium, it can be converted into uranium-233, a powerful fissile material. This opens the door to smaller reactors and long-term energy independence, potentially supplying India with abundant electricity for years."
