WATCH | Pedestrians were forced to use an unstable suspension footbridge to cross Mtshabezi Bridge in Gwanda District so they could reach their destinations. Reports say that some people lost their luggage when it fell into the river while they were crossing. The Mtshabezi River Bridge had been overflowing for more than 24 hours. Youths from the surrounding area took advantage of the situation by assisting pedestrians to cross the bridge and helping them carry their luggage for a fee.

$Yesterday, at different times of the day, I directed enforcement and clean-up operations across the state to address persistent street trading and environmental infractions. Our Environmental Task Force intervened at Ogudu Road by Ojota Junction, Iyana-Ipaja Under Bridge, and Egbeda Junction, where traders had encroached on the road, obstructing traffic and compromising public safety. During the operations, goods and wares were seized, and 15 offenders were arrested. All suspects will be arraigned in court, and the seized items will be forfeited to the State in line with existing laws. Street trading remains illegal in Lagos, and we will continue to enforce the law firmly and fairly to keep our roads safe, orderly, and free for all road users. #ZeroToleranceLagos$

Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, along with representatives from the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund, the Namibian Police, and other stakeholders, this morning visited the site of an accident involving four pedestrians yesterday. This visit took place on the B1 road between Katutura and Chinatown in the Northern Industrial Area, to observe traffic flow. The visit aims to address ongoing safety concerns, as motorists frequently hit pedestrians while they cross the B1 road. Yesterday, four people were struck by a vehicle on the road, all of whom sustained multiple injuries and are currently hospitalised. The team assessed the situation to identify short-, medium-, and long-term solutions to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists. Minister Nekundi directed the immediate deployment of law enforcement to control pedestrian movement and vehicle flow. This starts today from 16:00 to 19:00, repeating daily from 6:00 to 8:00 and 16:00 to 19:00. Stakeholders will continue engaging in long-term measures. In addition, 26 members of the notorious ‘Omotaku’ group who were apprehended from different parts of Lagos within the last 24 hours, were arraigned before the Magistrate Court in Oshodi. They pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them and were sentenced to three (3) months’ imprisonment in accordance with the law.
