This evening along Mombasa Road, I witnessed a deeply concerning situation where some pedestrians blatantly disregarded traffic rules, avoiding designated footbridges and instead risking their lives by crossing busy roads amid fast-moving traffic. This dangerous behavior continues to put lives at risk and has contributed to a worrying number of fatal accidents on our roads. This visit took place on the B1 road between Katutura and Chinatown in the Northern Industrial Area, to observe traffic flow. Yesterday, four people were struck by a vehicle on the road, all of whom sustained multiple injuries and are currently hospitalised. The team assessed the situation to identify short-, medium-, and long-term solutions to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists. Our Environmental Task Force intervened at Ogudu Road by Ojota Junction, Iyana-Ipaja Under Bridge, and Egbeda Junction, where traders had encroached on the road, obstructing traffic and compromising public safety. During the operations, goods and wares were seized, and 15 offenders were arrested. During yesterday’s heavy traffic congestion along the N1 Highway, a group of motor riders stepped in to call out the indiscipline of several drivers who had turned around and begun driving against the flow of oncoming traffic. The group called on the Ghana Highway Authority and other relevant agencies to take immediate action against the drivers over their disregard for road safety laws and regulations.
