🚇 Major Milestone for Metro Line 2B: 252 MT Span Lifted Over Central Railway Tracks in Just Two Hours Between 1 AM and 3 AM on June 14, MMRDA successfully completed the launch of the first composite steel span over the Central Railway corridor between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations on the CSMT–Panvel section. The 54.25-metre-long span, comprising four composite steel girders weighing a massive 252 metric tonnes, was erected within a tight two-hour railway block through meticulous planning and close coordination with Central Railway authorities. The operation involved tandem lifting using two 500 MT hydraulic cranes, backed by a standby crane, and was executed under stringent safety and quality protocols by a dedicated team of 30 engineers and technical staff, along with 100 skilled and unskilled personnel. All statutory approvals and block permissions were secured in advance. From precision fabrication and rigorous quality checks to flawless on-site execution, this achievement reflects MMRDA's commitment to engineering excellence, precision and safety in delivering world-class infrastructure for Mumbai. MMRDA has achieved a major construction milestone on the 13.9-km Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension (EFE), with the successful erection of the two Main Trusses of its Segment Launcher, each 59 metres long and weighing 160 tonnes, on the busy Eastern Express Highway. The entire complex operation was completed within a record 4-hour window, with the actual erection of both trusses taking just 1 hour. The operation was executed through meticulous planning, stringent safety measures and seamless coordination between MMRDA and the Mumbai Traffic Police. So, what happens next? With the Main Trusses now in place, the Segment Launcher will begin erecting 1,632 precast segments, each weighing approximately 90 MT, span by span. These will form the 25-metre-wide single-cell segment superstructure, accelerating viaduct construction and taking the project into its next major phase. And what does this mean for Mumbai? The EFE is a fully elevated, 6-lane high-speed corridor connecting Anand Nagar in Thane with Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar, designed to create a faster, more reliable route while easing congestion on the Eastern Express Highway, one of Mumbai’s busiest transport corridors. Once completed, the EFE is expected to reduce travel time between South Mumbai and Thane to approximately 20–25 minutes, making everyday journeys faster while strengthening connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Beneath Mumbai, momentum is building. MMRDA has completed 250 metres of underground tunnelling for the Orange Gate–Marine Drive Urban Road Tunnel, powered by India's largest slurry shield TBM for an urban road. A Century on Track. The Orange Line is rising. Mumbai’s Metro Line-12 – Orange Line Extension, being built by MMRDA, achieved another major construction milestone with the successful launch of its 100th U-girder near Dombivli MIDC Metro Station on Shilphata Road. The 23.57-km fully elevated corridor with 19 stations will deliver seamless, eco-friendly connectivity between Kalyan, Dombivli, Taloja and the Navi Mumbai International Airport. With this milestone, the project enters a faster execution phase, paving the way for quicker, cleaner and eco-friendly mobility between Thane and Navi Mumbai, while driving transit-oriented development across the Kalyan–Taloja belt. Running parallel to the Kalyan–Shilphata–Taloja corridor and integrating with the MSRDC Flyover for 7 km, the alignment will feature several engineering marvels including 100-metre clear spans near Kolegaon, critical Railway and ROB crossings, and high-rise station construction at 21–23 metres. The Kasheli Depot, the operational backbone of Mumbai Metro Line 5, is steadily taking shape with 23% overall physical progress achieved as of June 2026. Spread across approximately 27 hectares near Kasheli Toll Plaza, the depot is being developed to support the long-term operations, maintenance and stabling requirements of the 32 km Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan–Ulhasnagar Metro corridor. Designed to accommodate around 30 trainsets, the facility will include inspection bays, workshop lines, a test track, a Depot Control Centre, administrative facilities, staff quarters, utility infrastructure and advanced maintenance systems. Given the site's challenging marine clay conditions, #MMRDA has adopted advanced ground improvement techniques in consultation with #IITBombay to ensure long-term structural stability. At the same time, temporary inspection, testing and commissioning facilities are being developed to support the phased rollout and early operational readiness of #MumbaiMetro Line 5. Mumbai, the wait is almost over. A brand-new, safer, smarter, and smoother Monorail will soon be at your service. We’re proud to share that the Monorail has secured the mandatory safety certification for its new rolling stock and the CBTC-based signalling system from the Independent Safety Assessor, Bureau Veritas, a global leader in testing, inspection, and certification. This is a massive milestone and brings us one step closer to opening the upgraded Monorail for public use. The next step will be the appointment of a retired Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety official to carry out a comprehensive inspection of the entire 19.54 km Monorail corridor and to grant the final statutory clearance to resume passenger operations. This process is also expected to be completed soon, after which the new, improved Monorail will be back in action for Mumbai. Big milestone for Mumbai’s Underground Mobility Project: Orange Gate–Marine Drive Tunnel Begins Main Drive The Orange Gate–Marine Drive Road Tunnel, one of India’s most complex urban road tunnelling projects, has reached another historic milestone with the main tunnelling drive now officially underway. This is a pivotal moment for Mumbai’s underground mobility network. Purpose-built for Mumbai’s challenging coastal geology, the Tunnel Boring Machine — India’s largest slurry shield TBM for an urban road tunnel — achieved a crucial breakthrough recently, and has since advanced rapidly, excavating an impressive 70 metres within a few days. Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis and Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister & MMRDA Chairman Shri Eknath Shinde had launched the TBM on December 3, 2025. The project involves the construction of twin tunnels spanning over 7 km. The first tunnel, currently under construction, extends 3.45 km, reaching depths of up to 52 metres, while passing beneath the Central and Western Railway corridors and Mumbai Metro Line 3 with exceptional safety and engineering precision. Once complete, the project will reduce travel time between Orange Gate and Marine Drive to just 5 minutes, enabling seamless East-West connectivity, direct integration with the Coastal Road and Atal Setu, and significantly reducing congestion, fuel consumption and emissions. Following the launch, the project has achieved several key milestones, including the lowering of the backup system unit of the TBM and connecting it to the TBM shield, before successful completion of the initial tunnelling drive. Metro services have commenced today on the 4.7 km corridor from Dahisar East to Kashigaon, with four stations along the route, enhancing connectivity and making travel between Mumbai and Mira-Bhayandar faster and more convenient. This project, with an investment of approximately ₹6607 crore, will reduce the current travel time from 1-2 hours to nearly 30 minutes. In the upcoming phases, this corridor will be integrated with Metro Line 3, enabling seamless travel from Mira-Bhayandar to Colaba. With over 100 kilometres of metro lines now operational, Mumbai has emerged as the second-largest metro network in the country after Delhi. In the coming years, the network will expand further with the completion of several ongoing projects, strengthening connectivity across the city. The first phase of Metro Line 2B, spanning 5.6 km with five stations, is now operational from today. Once the rest of the phases are fully completed, this transformative project will seamlessly connect the East-West and North-South corridors, enabling smoother and more efficient travel across the city. Notably, this will be the first metro line to connect with the Harbour Line, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Mumbai’s integrated urban transport network. The e-Bhoomipujan of the innovative ‘Pod Taxi’ project was undertaken in the BKC area, marking a significant step towards strengthening last-mile connectivity. This automated system will enable commuters to reach within 100–150 metres of their destinations, enhancing convenience and efficiency. MMRDA Begins Resurfacing Works on Atal Setu for Enhanced Durability & Riding Comfort The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has initiated comprehensive resurfacing and pavement restoration works on the Atal Setu, ensuring long-term strength and superior riding comfort for commuters. To avoid complete closure of the bridge, the work is being carried out in phases. The third and fourth lanes will be resurfaced first, and once completed, the remaining two lanes will be taken up. After observing pavement distress in certain localised stretches on the Navi Mumbai–bound carriageway, starting at the 10.4 km mark, mainly on the outer heavy-vehicle lanes, MMRDA conducted a detailed technical review. Temporary rectification using mastic asphalt was carried out during the monsoon to maintain smooth traffic flow and ensure commuter safety. Now that the monsoon has subsided, full-fledged resurfacing operations have commenced. The works are being executed under the expert guidance of IIT Bombay, covering every stage — from material selection and mix design to plant-level and on-site quality control. Since the project is still under the defect liability period, the entire cost will be borne by the contractor. MMRDA remains committed to maintaining world-class standards of quality, safety, and durability on the Atal Setu — ensuring a safe, seamless, and smooth driving experience on India’s longest sea bridge. After observing pavement distress in certain localised stretches on the Navi Mumbai–bound carriageway, starting at the 10.4 km mark, mainly on the outer heavy-vehicle lanes, MMRDA conducted a detailed technical review. Temporary rectification using mastic asphalt was carried out during the monsoon to maintain smooth traffic flow and ensure commuter safety. Now that the monsoon has subsided, full-fledged resurfacing operations have commenced. The works are being executed under the expert guidance of IIT Bombay, covering every stage — from material selection and mix design to plant-level and on-site quality control. Since the project is still under the defect liability period, the entire cost will be borne by the contractor.
