visionOS in REAL LIFE?! To pitch one of my Vision Pro app concepts to an online interior shop, we prototyped an idea we’ve had for a while: What if you could bring visionOS windows into the real world by printing them onto real frosted glass panels? Not only would this make for a fantastic marketing stunt, but it could also allow people to (kind of) experience these apps in stores without needing to wear a headset at all. Finding the perfect glass, turning a digital design into a printable layout, and producing it took many iterations. Each time, we had to reprint and refine the design, which took several months. For a single pitch, it was definitely too much work, but it was a fun experiment. Looking ahead, I can see this concept becoming the future of advertising Spatial Computing apps in the physical world.

$Meet My AI Ears. A lot of folks ask me how I capture ASMR video and audio for training of AI? I always use Binaural 3D audio and have for decades in different forms. But how? A Brief History of Binaural Recording Binaural recording, the foundation of 3D audio, dates back to 1881 when French inventor Clément Ader created the first system using multiple telephone transmitters at the Paris Opera to transmit stereo sound to listeners, simulating spatial presence. By the 1920s, patents like W. Bartlett Jones’ 1927 filing advanced devices for capturing and reproducing “binaural” signals. The 1930s saw Alan Blumlein’s work on stereophonic sound, which he termed “binaural,” laying groundwork for modern stereo. Commercial milestones hit in the 1950s with binaural records from labels like Cook Laboratories and the first binaural reel-to-reel tapes. A resurgence came in the 1970s with Neumann’s KU-80 dummy head, the first commercial binaural system. Today, it’s integral to VR, ASMR, and immersive media. The Technology of Binaural 3D Audio At its core, binaural recording mimics human hearing by using two microphones placed in ear-shaped molds or a dummy head, separated like human ears (typically 14-18 cm apart). This captures spatial cues: interaural time differences (ITD) for sound arrival timing, interaural level differences (ILD) for volume variations, and head-related transfer functions (HRTF) that account for how the head, torso, and pinnae filter sounds. The 3DIO series features dual omnidirectional capsules in realistic silicone ear molds, spaced 14 cm apart for compact, accurate 3D capture based on over 13 years of research into human hearing. Models like the Free Space Pro II use premium DPA 4060 CORE capsules for ultra-low noise and high sensitivity, delivering stereo output ideal for immersive applications like game audio. Today just about any ASMR producer uses these. But I use them to capture, curate and archive sound and video we will lose or just about lost for AI training in a way no model or AI company is doing today. SqueezeMe: Efficient Gaussian Avatars for VR TL;DR: Three of these Gaussian Splatting avatars can be run at 72 frames per second. It runs locally on a Meta Quest 3 VR headset. Abstract (excerpt): While previous methods require a desktop GPU for real-time inference of a single avatar, we aim to squeeze multiple Gaussian avatars onto a portable virtual reality headset with real-time drivable inference. We begin by training a previous work, Animatable Gaussians, on a high-quality dataset captured with 512 cameras. The Gaussians are animated by controlling a base set of Gaussians with linear blend skinning (LBS) motion, and then further adjusting them with a neural network decoder to correct their appearance. When deploying the model on a Meta Quest 3 VR headset, we find two major computational bottlenecks: the decoder and the rendering. To accelerate the decoder, we train the Gaussians in UV-space instead of pixel-space and distill the decoder to a single neural network layer. Further, we discover that neighborhoods of Gaussians can share a single corrective from the decoder, providing an additional speedup. To accelerate the rendering, we develop a custom pipeline in Vulkan that runs on the mobile GPU. Putting it all together, we run 3 Gaussian avatars concurrently at 72 FPS on a VR headset.

This woman’s daughter bought a used car two weeks ago and it’s been in the shop 9 days out of those two weeks. The warranty won’t fix the issues the car has because the issues are being caused by an accident. I feel the dealership failed big time on this trade in. Why take a car on trade that has issues they refuse to fix. I can’t imagine them selling a car to anyone and saying that the warranty is voided because of extensive damage caused by an accident. To me this sounds like the dealership scammed them and should be liable for all repairs or at least replace the car for free with something comparable. I’ve never experienced anything this bad from a dealer. The closest thing I’ve had is that the new car I bought had a tire that had a flat spot due to it sitting on the lot for so long. When driven, the tire would vibrate like it was out of balance. The dealer kept passing the buck to the manufacturer and the manufacturer blamed the dealer. Eventually I was able to get the dealer to replace the tire because of pure persistence but the experience left me with a poor experience and I never went back to them.

This woman’s daughter bought a used car two weeks ago and it’s been in the shop 9 days out of those two weeks. The warranty won’t fix the issues the car has because the issues are being caused by an accident. I feel the dealership failed big time on this trade in. Why take a car on trade that has issues they refuse to fix. I can’t imagine them selling a car to anyone and saying that the warranty is voided because of extensive damage caused by an accident. To me this sounds like the dealership scammed them and should be liable for all repairs or at least replace the car for free with something comparable. One app I really miss: Detour It was an immersive podcast experience that blended storytelling with location- you’d walk through a city while an amazing narrator (like Ken Burns) guided you, syncing their voice to your exact position... you could do them at your own speed, the audio would work even if you walked faster. It felt like being inside a documentary, with local voices, hidden histories, and personal anecdotes unfolding as you moved. It was founded by Andrew Mason (post-Groupon)... at the time (10 yrs ago) it was one of the best demos I’d ever gotten. Intimate, place-based audio. I think it probably struggled as a business (not sure how you acquire customers for a travel app like this), was acquired and shut down by Bose in 2018. No replacement has captured that magic for me since.
