This is becoming unbearable as we are approaching the peak #oliveridley nesting season. 21 carcasses found in #kovalam alone today morning. Illegal trawling wreaking havoc and #TamilNadu govt machinery is just watching. Yesterday, fisheries dept received information on ray fish net deployed at Alamparaikuppam, which is a notorious fishing village, and an estimated 100 turtles allegedly got entangled. So far, no action is taken. Trawling, use of gill nets & ray fish nets are strictly prohibited with 5 nautical miles. In a swift action, the Tamil Nadu Forest and Crime Control Bureau has nabbed three people involved in the trading of Pangolin Scales. Around 1.16 Kilograms of Pangolin Scales have been recovered from them. The misconception about medicinal benefits of the Pangolin Scales has made Pangolins the most trafficked species across the globe. Pangolin is a highly endangered mammal and is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
