#SaveThamirabarani: This is how Tamil Nadu’s only perennial river Thamirabarani is highly polluted in Tirunelveli corporation limit. “The #DEWATS (Decentralised Wastewater Treatment System) structures were constructed just to deceive the #NationalGreenTribunal which heard my petition for 8 years. None of the 10 DEWATS is functional. The corporation sewage is let to the river without treatment. Unless the state government forms the #ThamirabaraniRiverRejuvenationCommission, it cannot make this river pollution free,” said environmentalist S P Muthuraman. "In 2022 order, the NGT observed that the water in Thamirabarani River has a Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) of 20-30 mg/l and contains very high fecal coliform. However, the city corporation did not take any concrete steps to improve the water quality of #Thamirabarani, which is the drinking water source to #Tirunelveli, #Tenkasi, #Thoothukudi, #Virudhunagar and #Ramanathapuram districts," he added. Tirunelveli City Municipal Corporation Collector Tirunelveli CMOTamilNadu K.N.NEHRU Siva.V.Meyyanathan-தமிழ்நாட்டை தலைகுனியவிடமாட்டேன் Supriya Sahu IAS

River Thamirabarani in Tirunelveli now. The situation remains same for over 2 decades. In Tirunelveli Corporation alone, large volumes of untreated sewage are discharged into river at more than 15 locations. During my election coverage over the past month, only few raised the issue of cleaning Thamirabarani.
