CNET after testing Tesla FSD V14: I Drove Over 100 Miles With Tesla's Latest Full Self-Driving and Never Touched the Wheel. "Four days, 4 hours and 100 miles through San Francisco. I'm now fully convinced Tesla's FSD system is the future of driving. It drove me through it all. Tight curbside streets, janky parking garages, rain-slicked freeways, and even the crooked mess of Lombard Street -- both in dry and wet weather -- all without a hiccup. It handled it better than some people I saw reversing down driveways. I never felt the need to take over. Parking was the cherry on top. It would pull into or reverse into spaces, even in tight garages. Occasionally, I'd pick the exact space I wanted, but most of the time, I just let it do its thing. And it did it well. I've used Autopilot plenty, in the UK where FSD isn't a thing. But FSD is miles ahead. I'd be lying if I said it didn't feel slightly magical. I've never driven in San Francisco before. I didn't know the streets. But the car did. And I trusted it. That's the key takeaway here: I trusted the system. At no point did I clench, panic, or even hesitate. 🔥 $PLTR Co-founder Joe Lonsdale with Tom Bilyeu on Why Meritocracy and Intelligence Matters "At Palantir, we started off with a bunch of these math champions and chess champions, just the best people out of the Ph.D. programs at Stanford, MIT, and other places. They brought their smartest friends, who brought their smartest friends, and that’s just a huge advantage. In the tech world, with the very, very top companies, you don’t see just average people there. You see extraordinarily bright minds, and that three, four, or fifth standard deviation of skill is the same way. By the way, if you want to have the Oakland A’s be a top baseball team or a top basketball team, you can’t just have an average guy on the team. You need the very, very best—the top merit in that area. In some cases, it’s a skill, like in sports. In other areas, it’s IQ, and IQ matters a lot for what we’re doing." The American government was really competent in the mid-20th century. Is it something that no one else could do? You know, we fought two world wars. We went to the Moon. It turns out that we used to have really hard tests to run things in the U.S. government. So, allow me to go back a little bit to the 19th century. The government grew a lot after the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln created a lot of new departments, and the central government all of a sudden became a much bigger thing in the 1860s and 70s. By the time of 1883, it was a mess. Everyone agreed, this is a mess because whoever wins the presidency just brings in all their friends, all their cronies, their stupid cousin Vinnie, whoever else. They’re all getting paid a ton of money just to hang out in D.C. and not get anything done. So, they said, “Guys, we need to have tests. We need to have merit. We need to actually say the people running things need to be really smart.” So, we put in these tests with the Pendleton Act of 1883, and these tests were there all the way through the Moon landing, through everything. Then, come the late 1970s, our country became very politicized around affirmative action. It turns out these tests had different results on average for different races. They weren’t racist tests, by the way. I would agree that the tests actually measured your performance. But despite that, the activist courts on the left said, “No more tests.” So, around 1980 or so, they threw out the tests. And, by the way, they didn’t just throw out the tests. They made it almost impossible to fire people. They put in massive protections where it’s really hard and slow to fire people. So, starting in 1980, our government is not able to do tests anymore, not able to do merit. It just starts getting dumber slowly over time—dumber and dumber. So, for 45 years, our government’s been getting dumber. That is interesting. Tom Bilyeu: One of the great revelations of my adult life—and this actually bothers me—is the degree to which intelligence matters. What role do you think intelligence plays, full stop? Whether you’re trying to improve the government, whether you’re trying to be the baddest kid on the international block, or you’re trying to build a company? Joe Lonsdale: This is a really important point because, obviously, intelligence isn’t everything. I think integrity, faith, why you care about the world, and your motives matter to help people. But if you actually want to be effective at whatever those motives are, intelligence is absolutely central. Merit is absolutely central. Autonomous driving through tight, dynamic, stochastic, and adversarial traffic-dynamics on sub-urban roads in India, as well as through partially unstructured environments. And honestly, it’s hard to explain this feeling to someone who hasn’t experienced the latest software yet. It’s freakin 2026... When I activate Tesla’s Full Self-Driving, the car is doing far more than simple cruise control that other car companies show off... it's really funny when I see them advertise it tbh. My Tesla is literally watching the world around it with eight cameras that give it a full 360° view. All that video feeds into the onboard AI computer inside the car, which is constantly analyzing everything around it like cars, lanes, pedestrians, traffic lights, construction zones, and making decisions in real time. Tesla has millions of cars on the road, and every single one is helping train the system. Even when people are driving manually, the AI is running quietly in the background predicting what it would do in that situation. And when something unusual happens, a weird intersection, a sudden obstacle, an unexpected move from another driver, that short clip gets sent back to Tesla’s data systems. Engineers then use those clips to train the next version of the driving AI. And that updated AI then gets pushed back to every Tesla through a software update. I’ve seen enough. Smart Assist has reached its breaking point. I was casually getting a few games in with my Barca team when I encountered a pro player who is Top 22 in the World in PvP divisions and Top 30 in the World in AI divisions using Smart Assist. This guy is clearly not a beginner at the game and I don’t want to hear any sort of nonsense excuse trying to justify him using Smart Assist because this feature was meant to help noobs and beginners at the game not pro players who know the game inside and out. I can only assume that 99% of the playerbase is using Smart Assist. It’s a fact that I am struggling to come to terms with but this is the unfortunate reality. What has happened is that slowly more and more players who were not using Smart Assist experienced how dreadful it is playing against a Smart Assist user regardless of the skill level of the Smart Assist user and decided to turn it on themselves so they don’t have to endure the suffering that comes with playing against Smart Assist. It’s a little depressing seeing where the game is at right now but this is unfortunately Konami’s vision for the game. I just can’t wrap my head around it when you literally can have a garbage team with $0 spent with Smart Assist turned on and be able to smash a fully paid premium Epic and Big Time team by pressing and holding 1 button the entire game. Hopefully soon they will realize that all of the Smart Assist users (which is 99% of the playerbase) will see no need to spend any money on the game since an untrained GP Niklas Sule from the Standard Player list with 67 speed and 48 acceleration (I’m not lying that’s literally his stats) is able to catch up with George Best with 100+ speed and 100+ Acceleration.
