NYC Mayor Mamdani: I want to be clear: $5.4 billion is still a very steep mountain to climb. There are two paths we can take, one that offers long-term stability, and a second that would bring significant pain, which we deeply hope to avoid. If we cannot pursue this first path, we will be forced onto a much more damaging path of last resort, one where we use the only tools at the city’s disposal: raising property taxes and raiding our reserves. This second path is painful. We will continue to work with Albany to avoid it. The first path delivers the structural change we need to recalibrate the relationship between the city and the state. As we know, New Yorkers contribute 54.5% of state revenue but receive only 40.5% back. At the same time, New York City’s share of the state’s GDP has grown by nearly 10% since 2010. That imbalance is untenable. Once again, I am calling on Albany to end the drain. There is no third option of failing to balance the budget. By law, ever since the fiscal crisis of the 1970s, which placed the city on the brink of bankruptcy, New York City has been required to balance its budget. We will do so. If we cannot pursue this first path, we will be forced onto a much more damaging path of last resort — one where we use the only tools at the city’s disposal: raising property taxes and raiding our reserves. This second path is painful. We will continue to work with Albany to avoid it. The first path delivers the structural change we need to recalibrate the relationship between the city and the state. As we know, New Yorkers contribute 54.5% of state revenue but receive only 40.5% back. At the same time, New York City’s share of the state’s GDP has grown by nearly 10% since 2010. That imbalance is untenable. Once again, I am calling on Albany to end the drain. There is no third option of failing to balance the budget. By law, ever since the fiscal crisis of the 1970s — which placed the city on the brink of bankruptcy — New York City has been required to balance its budget. We will do so. If we cannot pursue the first path, the only remaining option is the second. At the heart of this path is a property tax increase. This would effectively be a tax on working- and middle-class New Yorkers, whose median income is $122,000. The second path also requires us to raid our reserves. It would mean withdrawing $980 million from the city’s Rainy Day Fund in fiscal year 2026 and $229 million from the Retiree Health Benefit Trust in fiscal year 2027. These steps have been taken before, but only in moments of extraordinary external crisis — Mayor Bloomberg’s response to the 2008 financial collapse and Mayor de Blasio’s response to the revenue shortfall caused by the pandemic. We do not want to turn to such drastic measures to balance our budget.

It penalizes the very thing that we want, which is more employment in the city of Chicago. People are not going to like certain kinds of revenue enhancements that he’s got in his budget. So you’ve got to find efficiencies, and there are efficiencies to be found—some with technology, some because we have departments doing things that maybe we don’t need done. And finally, how about we do our best to attract, retain, and grow businesses in the city of Chicago, because that, again, is the best way for us to pay the bills.” Under Johnson’s proposal all companies employing 100+ people in Chicago would have to pay a tax of $21 per employee per month. As Pritzker correctly points out, it’s a punishment for creating jobs.

VIDEO: How we used religion to give Tinubu victory – El-Rufai The former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has said that he and some northern governors used religion as a political tool to give victory to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election. According to the former governor, the decision to use religion as a political strategy was to help tackle the issue of tribalism and religion in politics in the country. The former governor stated this in a viral video. He was speaking to an audience in the Hausa language in Kaduna at an event before handing over to his successor. He said, “Allah sees our heart, me and Zamfara State Governor, Mutawalle did it because of God and we didn’t do it because of anything. We only do it in order to have solutions to the current religious problem we are having in Nigeria and for us to give South West Muslims a sense of belonging to rule. And it is because of religion that we used that gave Asiwaju victory.” He also noted that the Muslim/Muslim ticket that he used to achieve political success in Kaduna has now been replicated in Nigeria with the emergence of Bola Tinubu as president and Kashim Shetima as vice president. He said, “What we are able to achieve in Kaduna state now has been achieved in Nigeria as a whole. There is no liar that will come and say he will do politics as a Christian and win an election. But Professor Akintola and their leaders came from Lagos and said this is their thought If power is given to the West since we all agreed that it should be given to them the Yoruba people from the South-West have a problem, their Muslims cannot contest, and win an election. A Christian will have to contest and have a Muslim from the North as a vice. They said since from Abiola it had never happened. They said they wanted that and I asked them to bring the person we will support and BAT got the ticket.
