Sheger City, located in the Oromiya region of Ethiopia, has become a focal point of controversy due to the demolition of homes belonging to ethnic Amharas and the forced evictions taking place. The Oromiya region claims to be establishing a homogenous territory exclusively for the Oromo ethnic group, considering it their rightful homeland. Thousands of houses have been destroyed, leaving many Amharas displaced and without shelter. The situation has raised concerns about human rights violations and the discriminatory nature of the actions being taken. The administrator of Sheger City delivered a controversial speech that many have condemned as resembling modern-day fascism. The victims, unable to find alternative housing due to a prohibition on renting to them by law , were left with no choice but to flee to other regions, particularly the Amhara region. Sheger City, located in the Oromiya region of Ethiopia, has become a focal point of controversy due to the demolition of homes belonging to ethnic Amharas and the forced evictions taking place. The Oromiya region claims to be establishing a homogenous territory exclusively for the Oromo ethnic group, considering it their rightful homeland. Thousands of houses have been destroyed, leaving many Amharas displaced and without shelter. The situation has raised concerns about human rights violations and the discriminatory nature of the actions being taken. The administrator of Sheger City delivered a controversial speech that many have condemned as resembling modern-day fascism. He referred to the victims as "poor and illegal," implying that their suffering was inconsequential. The speech not only displayed a lack of empathy but also perpetuated an environment of discrimination and prejudice. The Oromo Prosperity Party, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, continued with the forceful demolitions, further reinforcing the notion of creating an ethnically homogenous Oromiya. These actions, under the guise of ethno-federalism, contribute to the marginalization and disenfranchisement of Amharas born in the Oromiya region, rendering them legally stateless. The Ethiopian federalism model designates regions as ethnic homelands, concentrating power and land ownership solely within the corresponding ethnic group. This system perpetuates an environment where only members of a specific ethnicity have access to resources and opportunities, creating a form of ethnic apartheid. The demolition of over Ten-thousands ethnic Amhara homes and forced evictions in Sheger City raise serious concerns about human rights abuses and discriminatory policies in Ethiopia. The victims, including children like the young girl featured in the video footage, have lost their homes, belongings, and access to education. The controversial speech by the city's administrator and the ongoing demolitions reflect a disturbing trend towards creating an ethnically homogenous region at the expense of minority communities. One of my favorite news anchors Palki Sharma sums up perplexing actions of Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed in this piece on Vantage detailing his record of war and turmoil since ascension to power a mere 5 years ago. Continuous war and bloodshed Destruction of 3 regions in the north Famine (both man made and related to drought) Forced Displacement and ethnic cleansing Economic Turmoil and rising inflation Sustaining a governance system without checks and balances Corruption and aid embezzlement Poor diplomacy with neighbors Apartheid rule and rise of ethnic hegemony Massive human rights violations ..are just some of the achievements of Abiy Ahmeds government which boasted of bringing systemic change, equal representation and prosperity to the nation.
