A fascinating interaction between a wolf and a bear at a bait pile put out by a local bear hunting guide. The bear initially chases the wolf away, but 5 minutes later, the wolf and bear are feeding at the bait pile a few feet from each other. We are currently in the 2nd week of the bear baiting season, and the hunting season opens tomorrow. Starting in mid-August, hunters maintain bait piles stocked with foods such as nuts, candies, donuts, and dried fruit to get bears visiting the area before the season opens on Sept. 1. All in all, bear hunting is a boon for wolves because it happens at their leanest time of year. As a result, wolves quickly find the bait piles in their territories and spend considerable time eating the bait (as you can see here). Once bear hunting season begins, the situation gets even better for wolves for three reasons: The first is that bear season results in many gut piles which wolves will eat in a heartbeat (and they excel at finding them). The second is that hunters and guides discard the remains of bear carcasses they have butchered (we know this always surprises some but people eat bear meat…we have had it and it is pretty tasty). Wolves find these carcasses and spend a lot of time scavenging every last morsel. The third reason: some bears are wounded or killed but not recovered by hunters. Both scenarios create opportunities for wolves to get the biggest-ticket item of bear season: an entire bear carcass. When bears are killed but not recovered, wolves win the lottery: a 100 to 300+ pound buffet just sitting in the woods, ready to be consumed. For a 60- to 70-pound wolf at the leanest time of year, that is about as good as it gets. When bears are wounded, wolves almost certainly can and will kill and consume them if the bear is vulnerable enough. We have studied wolf predation for the past 12 years, and almost the only time we have documented predation on black bears is in September, and to a lesser extent, early October. Overall, bear hunting almost certainly increases the interactions between wolves and bears. Some interactions, such as this one, are chill—with both animals tolerating each other. Others are not so chill. Either way, wolves definitely benefit from bear hunting.

Matt Rhule (Matt Rhule) is widely regarded as one of the best builders of culture in the world. Much of his philosophy with Nebraska Football was shaped by his experience as a walk-on at Penn State, where he learned three foundational truths: 1. "Everything Matters". 2. Every person deserves to be held to championship standards. 3. The most important investment you can make is in the person, not the player: 🏆 Championship standards only stick when they apply to everyone. The moment the rules bend for one person, the culture begins to break for everyone. The fastest way to erode trust in a team is to be selective with accountability. If the star player can skip the line, arrive late, or ignore details that would get someone else corrected, the message is clear: talent earns exemption. When no one is above the standard and no one is beneath it, trust deepens, entitlement disappears, and discipline becomes a shared identity rather than just a set of rules imposed by coaches. 🪣 Every player carries water for the program. The star may score the points, but the walk-on who dives on the floor in practice also helps build the habits that win championships. The star may finish the play, but the walk-on helps build the foundation that makes the play possible. When a team understands that every person carries water, no role feels small, and everyone takes OWNERSHIP of the mission. 🫡 Holding every person to the same standard is one of the highest forms of respect. It tells your best players they are not above the team, and it tells your role players they are essential to it. It will take everyone to win a championship, and just one person to mess it up. The most disciplined teams transform accountability into a shared promise: we will honor each other enough to demand the best from everyone, regardless of role, situation, or title.

Watch the full extraordinary war of words between Fabian Hürzeler vs. Mikel Arteta after Arsenal beat Brighton 1-0. 🧂 Hürzeler: “There are different kinds of winning. So if they win the Premier League, no one will ask how they win the Premier League. I think you can really feel that. They do everything now to win this game and in the end it's about the rules. “So if the Premier League is the referee's decision, then it's difficult. They [Arsenal] make their own rules. At the moment, I have the feeling they are doing their own rules no matter how they are playing. So that's why I think it's difficult to judge that. “Overall, like I said, I will never be that kind of manager who tries to win in that way. I want to do well as players. I want my players to keep improving and keep playing football on the pitch. “In the end, of course, every team will manage and waste time but I think there has to be a limit and the limit has to be set by the Premier League. The limit has to be set by the referees. At the moment, they just can do what they want. “We will get the statistics for that. I made my point before the game and I stick to it and everyone else can judge it on his own. I'm not sure if I would ask now, everyone here in the room. Did he really enjoy this football game? “I'm sure maybe one raises his arm because he's a big Arsenal fan. But beside that, no chance. So that's why, again, it's just a repetition. We waste too much time about talking about Arsenal and their game.” Arteta responded: “What a surprise…” “Just go back for the previous games and you will find a lot of comments like this always. “I love my players, that's the highlight. I love my players, we love our players and I love the way we compete.“

Full video and transcript of Elon Musk's speech at Donald Trump's rally a few hours ago. "Hi, everyone. As you can see I'm not just MAGA. I'm dark MAGA. First of all, I want to say what an honor it is to be here You know, the true test of someone's character is how they behave under fire. And we had one president who couldn't climb a flight of stairs and another who was fist-pumping after getting shot. Fight, fight, fight! Blood coming down the face. America is the home of the brave, and there's no true test than courage under fire. Who do you want representing America? And I think this election is the most important election of our lifetime. This is no ordinary election. The other side wants to take away your freedom of speech. They want to take away your right to bear arms. They want to take away your right to vote effectively. You've got 14 states now that don't require voter ID. California, where I used to live, just passed a law banning voter ID for voting. I still can't believe that's real. So how are you supposed to have a good, proper election if there's no ID? It's just meaningless. And free speech is the bedrock of democracy. And if people don't know what's going on, if they don't know the truth, how can you make an informed vote? You must have free speech in order to have democracy. That's why it's the First Amendment, and the Second Amendment is there to ensure that we have the First Amendment. President Trump must win to preserve the Constitution. He must win to preserve democracy in America. This is a must win situation. So I have one ask for everyone in the audience, everyone who watches this video, everyone in the live stream, there's one request. It's very important. Register to vote. Okay? And get everyone you know and everyone you don't know. Drag them to register to vote. There's only two days left to register to vote in Georgia and Arizona. 48 hours. Text people now, now. And then, make sure they actually do vote. If they don't, this will be the last election. That's my prediction. Nothing's more important. So, I'm speaking to people out there. Everyone in the crowd, I think, is already convinced. But for people out there that are watching the video, watching the live stream, you need to get everyone you know at work, your friends, family, text groups, your social media, everything. Get them to register to vote. Right now. Only two days left for Georgia and Arizona. Only a couple weeks left in Pennsylvania. And if they're not registered to vote, it doesn't matter at that point. Register. I'm being repetitive for a reason. A lot of people think maybe the vote doesn't count. Well, it does. It does. It matters. And this election could be decided by 1000 votes, 500 votes, a tiny margin. So get everyone you know to register to vote. And double-check that your registration is good. Don't take it for granted. I'm just being repetitive about this point because it is one takeaway. More than anything, what will matter is getting those registrations and then getting everyone you know to actually vote. That is what will decide this election, especially in Pennsylvania. And honestly, you want to just be a pest. Just be a pest to everyone you know, people on the street, everywhere. Vote, vote, vote, fight, fight, fight! Thank you."

Sometimes wolves do curious things…like Wolf Y1T here who we filmed two summers ago sauntering along the highway as traffic passed by. Wolf Y1T is one of the most visually-striking wolves in our area, given the distinctive dark markings on his face, and has been the breeding male of the Blood Moon Pack since 2022. During his tenure, we have had a handful of observations somewhat like this and know of other folks in the area who have had similar observations. For one reason or another, Wolf Y1T, at times, just seems indifferent towards people. He has never acted aggressively or in a way that we find concerning for human safety. But he just goes about his business regardless. Ironically, we have studied his predation behavior, visited his kills, tagged his pups, and spent considerable time in his territory for several years where we have been in close proximity to him (based on his GPS-collar data) but never seen him. We have only seen him in these kind of contexts. Of course, some will likely say he has “lost his fear of people”, because when wolves don’t immediately run away from people or seem to indifferent to the presence of people at times, some take it as an indication that they have no fear of people, which simply is not true. Wolves, like many other wildlife including other carnivores, can be curious or indifferent to the presence of people at certain times or contexts. We have run into many animals including bears, moose, and deer that do not immediately run upon seeing us in the woods but instead stand there and stare at us. However, such behavior by wolves is generally not advantageous because such wolves are at a much higher risk of being illegally killed. Nonetheless, Y1T has figured out a way to persist for several years.

Peter Thiel said something that flatly contradicts everything business culture claims to believe. Thiel: “Most people believe that capitalism and competition are synonyms. I believe capitalism and competition are antonyms.” That’s not a nuance. That’s a complete inversion of how you’re taught to think about value. Every business school. Every startup pitch. Every founder origin story. All built on one article of faith. That competition is the engine. That the best companies win by outfighting everyone else. Thiel says that’s exactly why most businesses fail. Thiel: “A world of perfect competition is a world where all the profits are competed away.” Follow the logic to its end. More competitors. Thinner margins. Longer hours. Less money. Competition doesn’t create wealth. It dissolves it. The harder you fight inside a crowded market, the less there is left to win. Thiel: “The example I use of a bad type of business is opening a restaurant, which is super competitive and nobody ever makes any money doing it.” A million restaurants in America. Most will be gone inside five years. Not because the food was bad. Not because the founders didn’t sacrifice everything. Because they entered a game where even the winners barely break even. Thiel: “The example of a fantastic monopoly business I give is Google, which basically has had no competition in search since 2002.” Google didn’t outcompete Yahoo. Google made Yahoo a footnote in a history nobody reads. And it has printed money every single day since. One company fought for a market. The other became the market. That distinction is the entire lesson. Thiel: “It is the goal of every founder, of every entrepreneur, to try to build a monopoly business.” But this goes deeper than business advice. Competition feels productive because it’s measurable. You can track your rank. Your market share. Your position relative to everyone else. But relative position is not value creation. You can spend an entire career optimizing for a category someone else invented and call it progress. Bezos didn’t outcompete bookstores. He built something bookstores couldn’t even categorize. Thiel: “If you’re a one-of-a-kind company, a happy company that’s doing something different, you are a monopoly.” The pattern never changes. The people who built the most wealth in human history didn’t win a competition. They made competition a non-concept. They didn’t play the game better. They designed a different game entirely. One where they set the rules and the margins and the terms. And that reframes the only question that actually matters. Not how do I beat the competition. Why am I competing at all. Because competition is a confession. That someone else defined the game. Someone else set the rules. Someone else decided what winning looks like. And you showed up to play on their terms. The most valuable things ever built weren’t better answers to existing questions. They were entirely new questions. And the person who writes the question will always own the answer.

Counter Strike hacking is one of my guilty pleasures. This is a video of an AI tool built into one of the most popular HvH cheats on the market. HvH (Hack vs. Hack) is a game mode where everyone in the lobby is cheating. “If everyone is cheating, then how is it fun?” The game becomes something entirely different in this mode. Instead of focusing on physical reaction time, aim, and movement skills, players must concentrate on the quality of their cheats compared to those used by their opponents. The game essentially turns into a sandbox for software optimization, where cheaters compete against each other to see who has the better-written code and configuration. Players must use every tool available to keep up with everyone else in the scene. My favorite cheat, Anti-Aim (AA), is used to help protect players from getting shot by cleverly exploiting the game mechanics to fake the angle of their hitbox. It works by choking abs yaw packets to exploit a coding error in the game, causing your model’s position to appear bugged to other players. The server processes each command sent by the client in the order it receives them, then it updates animations for each command. After this, the server takes the latest information it has and sends it to other players. If you choke packets, you will essentially send all of your choked commands at the same time. Again, the server will look at what’s latest and send that to other players. Now, you should see the issue clearly: the client is missing loads of information and will start updating animations with incorrect information. This will lead to numerous inaccuracies in their animation state, most importantly their abs yaw (m_flGoalFeetyaw), which indicates where their feet are pointing. The creation of Anti-aim techniques significantly disrupted gameplay, giving users an extra unfair advantage. This compelled players to devise a solution— Resolvers are used to counter anti-aim by determining where the player’s hitbox actually is. One commonly used type of resolver is the old angle resolver. Old angle resolvers work by storing the previous angles from when the player wasn’t faking their position and later shooting at them. —forcing both sides—Anti-Aim developers and Resolver developers—to continuously improve their code and technique. HvH is an ever-evolving arms race where staying ahead is as much about innovation as it is about execution. Code rules all, and hitting p is the only goal. That’s what keeps me coming back. Former CIA Operations Officer Gary Berntsen explains there are teams of people who rig our elections and keep the vote totals extremely close, by slim margins, so it’s believable and hard to prove fraud Lara Logan interviews Former CIA operations officer Gary Berntsen. He explains, in detail, how elections are being stolen in America He describes there are teams of statisticians, mathematicians, and hackers who map out every county and identify where margins can be quietly adjusted Different techniques are used in each location so nothing matches in a recount. When a 70-30 county becomes 68-32, nobody notices. But when you add up these differences across an entire state, those tiny amounts of fraud decide outcomes Both former CIA operations officer Gary Berntsen and author Ralph Pezzullo explain the strategy. They explain they don't flip the big blue cities. Instead they shave votes in the places no one ever audits “They know where they can find the dead people... Mm-hmm.” “They plan this, It's meticulous. It's meticulous. These guys are experts at this. It's not just a few guys in a back room. You're talking about hundreds of statisticians and engineers, and they work it, you know, for a year to plan and mathematicians and hackers.” “We had a map out of Colorado when we were talking to our engineers, the guys that designed it, that stole the elections. — We just go to every one place where Trump wins 70-30 and — Shaved it off. We shave in every other place. We don't go near a Democratic place, because when they wanna do recounts, they're gonna go to the Democratic places. They don't realize we shaved in every other committee. We know every other county. We know how to do this. And then in each of those things where they shave, they shave with a different technique in each one of those. So if you found something in, in one county, there's no continuity around the state that way. So this is why the Republicans are so much at fault, because they have the power and the ability to show in their areas they can allow access to the machines, they can allow access to the source code”

Real quick thoughts on Bellum - which entered Beta yesterday. 1) There is nothing else like it. It's the only game designed specifically to force teamwork in a hardcore PVP tactical shooter. It does it in new ways: SA tools locked to leadership roles, novel respawn mechanics requiring you to maneuver near teammates and punishes lone wolves, and more. 2) It's a game about gunfights, and it does them so damn well. Fire and maneuver works. Fire superiority matters. Cover, concealment, obscuration, even IMTs are rewarded while bonzai charges are nearly always fatal. 3) I think what speaks to me most is how well it models the cognitive overload of a maneuver leader. A Squad leader in this game is monitoring/working up to 2 nets + local at once - Command, Squad, and VOIP. This is modeled in other games, of course. But Bellum adds some spice - your hand comes off your weapon to activate the PTT, so you can't fire particularly well or do medical tasks while working a net. By default, you have platoon assault net in one ear and squad assault in the other. It feels like I'm wearing peltors for an FMP or going on target. But despite all of the stimulus, leaders have to stay locked in to win, painting the picture for their squads, reporting higher, marking the map, and getting shit done despite the chaos. It's in day 2 of beta, so I'll hold my criticisms for now. But this game is on track to do some things we've not seen before, and to do them exceptionally well. Very excited to see where this one goes.
