Water is the stuff of life. The UK still hasn't recovered from the driest spring for 50 years, and natural water sources are still dry. Even if you are unable to do anything else, please provide fresh water nightly. Every night of the year. Animals die of thirst not only in the hot summer months, but throughout the winter months also, when natural water sources are frozen and inaccessible. A simple turn of the tap for you means the difference between life and death for them. This is a just a ground bird bath in my front garden. Visited during the day by all manner of birds, drinking and bathing. Included in the night shift, beside the hedgehogs and foxes, are smaller, but no less important creatures. Notice beneath the stray cat is a snail taking a drink. Then look under him, and there's a little frog quenching his thirst. Frogs don't drink through their mouths, they absorb the water through their skin via a 'drinking patch' on their belly and the underside of their thighs. Providing clean water is such an easy way to save a life. Please be a wildlife hero and get that water out there now.

This may come as a shock to a lot of people… but this woman and her family intentionally flood their entire backyard to water their trees and grass. It’s called flood irrigation — they literally let the whole yard fill up with water on purpose. She walks through and shows just how full it gets, and says people are always surprised this is how they do it. The water is untreated canal water (not city drinking water) that’s specifically allocated for this purpose. Have you ever seen (or used) flood irrigation like this? I've never seen or heard of this before.

When people say data centers use millions of gallons of water, they're describing an old technology. Before, water went into evaporative cooling towers. Warm water pulled heat off the AI chips, then evaporated into the air to shed it. It was effective, but it burned through fresh water continuously, which is where the headline numbers come from today around "data centers use a massive amount of water." These water trucks are heading from Russia's Rostov toward Ukraine. Due to Russian occupation, Donetsk region has been left without water. The region is currently suffering from extreme heat, and water is almost entirely unavailable. Both drinking and technical water now has to be delivered to more than 1.2 million residents of Donetsk and Makiivka, as well as to half a million people in other towns and cities. There is also a shortage of water for Russian soldiers from the "Center" and "East" military groupings. The hopelessness of the situation is not that there is no way to deliver water - because of leaky pipes, destroyed water intakes, and pumping stations. The real disaster is that the water itself has physically run out. In the Donetsk coal basin, nearly all mines have been flooded during the occupation. As long as the mines were operating or kept in dry conservation, water was regularly pumped out. But after Russian forces occupied the city in 2014, they first sold all the equipment from these mines for scrap metal, and then simply flooded everything. Flooding the mines means stopping the pumping of water from them - disrupted water horizons, underground rivers, etc. do their job. The tragedy is that once a mine fills up, its contents mix with these groundwater horizons. The resulting excess pressure forces this mine water to rise to the surface, creating huge rust-colored swamps - that's iron oxide. All natural sources have dried up, and every single hedgehog through these doors is suffering from extreme dehydration. Please put a dish of water out, in the front as well as the back, so all animals can access it. And if there's a nearby green space where wildlife frequent, please put a tub of water out. Carrying fresh water to it each day will tone your arms, get your steps in, and when you see the water level has gone down in the morning I guarantee you will feel good and virtuous all day.🥰

I like how he highlighted Galamsey. For anyone who’s new or doesn’t know about Galamsey. Galamsey basically means illegal mining. It happens in the Ashanti region, Central, Eastern and Western region, among others. It basically means mining without a license, often carried out in rivers , forests and other protected areas. The consequences of galamsey are serious because it leads to water pollution, destruction of farmlands, and loss of biodiversity. Mercury and cyanide, chemicals often used in the process, contaminate rivers and waterbodies, making them unsafe for drinking and farming. Many communities rely on the water from these rivers that are contaminated. Water treatments centers are shutting down due to the inability to filter the contaminated water. Babies are being born with birth defects, and there’s been a rise in kidney failure and other health related cases. Aside from the health and environmental impacts, Galamsey has severe social consequences. Some children are trafficked into illegal mining operations, often working in dangerous conditions for long hours. Galamsey is an ecosystem consisting of various actors that sustain its operations. As the dry season takes hold in Tsavo, the elephant visitors come to Ithumba in a steady stream. Up to 150 congregate by our water troughs sometimes. Head Keeper Benjamin and the team are ready. Behind these full troughs is Water for Wildlife — our complex, fully committed conservation programme. Northern Tsavo is marked by high salinity levels, rendering much of its water undrinkable. To solve the water challenge, we established a desalination plant in Ithumba. Now, we can take saline water directly from the Ithumba boreholes, process it through the plant, and make it potable. Multiple times a day, our bowsers deliver water and top up troughs, dispersing the wealth throughout the landscape. This innovation has also transformed operations for our teams and the KWS units who are also based in Ithumba. Since we began providing drinkable water, wildlife have come back to the area in droves. These reliable watering points encourage elephants to remain deep within the safety of the park instead of venturing onto community land in search of food and water, which helps reduce human-wildlife conflict. Can China completely stop the flow of the Brahmaputra into India? Not entirely. A significant share of the river's water is contributed by tributaries and monsoon rainfall after it enters India. However, experts note that China can still influence the timing of water flows through upstream reservoirs and dams, especially during the dry season, and by controlling the sharing of hydrological data. China is also building a massive hydropower project near the Great Bend of the Brahmaputra, close to the Indian border. At the same time, India is accelerating dam and infrastructure projects in the Brahmaputra basin to strengthen its own water security. So, technically, I think if aliens came here, they would name us Water because we are 70% water and only 30% land. What that means is the potential for solving any given water issue is extremely good. There's obviously desalination required at times and the transport of water, but it has become very inexpensive. And so, really, the availability of fresh water is simply about energy and transport. When I talk to even very well-read, very smart people in the United States, they will often think, well, the water crisis is unsolvable, but in fact it is very solvable. And we are continuing breakthroughs in the efficiency of desalination.
