But a certain corporation wants to dump a whole lot of treated Sewage from about 2900 homes which would discharge on average 1 million gallons per day of treated sewage into the Hilotes Creek watershed which recharges up to 15% of the Edwards aquifer. It is called Lennar Corp. And it is a Florida based developer and they want to put a big 2900 home subdivision in there and then dump all this treated sewage. Keep in mind, when they treat sewage, they're not pulling out the fluoride, the chlorine, the trace pharmaceuticals, the contraceptives, all this estrogenic chemicals would go right into the water table. Today, our team visited the Pappankalan Phase-2 Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and observed that treated wastewater is being mixed with sludge dumped near the STP’s outlet channel. This practice raises a serious concern regarding the effectiveness of the treatment process. When sludge is mixed back into the treated effluent, it defeats the very purpose of sewage treatment by reintroducing pollutants into the discharged water. During the monsoon season, the situation is likely to worsen significantly, as heavy rainfall will flush the dumped sludge into the Najafgarh Drain, which ultimately flows into the Yamuna River.

It just took one bad rainy season for Bengaluru to face a massive water shortage crisis. Given that extreme weather conditions will only become more common, this probably won't be the last time we face this crisis. I learned recently that wastewater could be part of the solution. Bengaluru's total freshwater demand is ~2632 (million litres a day) MLD, and it generates ~2000 MLD of wastewater. Of this, centralized sewage treatment plants treat ~1,300 MLD, and this water is used for agricultural purposes. About 3,500 apartments and commercial establishments have decentralized sewage treatment plants (STPs) and waste ~80% of their excess STP water. This STP water is low quality and mostly unusable beyond flushing and gardening. If this excess STP water can be converted to high-quality water, about 450–500 MLD of water demand could be met by decentralized treatment plans. Boson White Water is one startup we met that is trying to solve the problem of converting STP water to potable water.

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) today Wednesday 24th April, 2024 sealed off the office building of Carrillion Construction at Plot 10b, T.F Kuboye Street, Oniru extension, Victoria Island after it was discovered that the building had been carrying out illegal discharge of sewage into the public drainage via a pumping machine. The Lagos State Government reiterates its zero tolerance for illegal discharge of untreated sewage/ wastewater into the public drains and water bodies. Citizens are therefore advised to desist from this unlawful act and serious act of degradation of our environment. #CleanerLagos

Under the Punjab Saaf Pani Initiative, we are rapidly expanding our network of water filtration, surface water treatment and bottling plants to ensure that every household even in the most remote areas has access to safe, hygienic water. In remote areas where water is not available, bottled water will be delivered to doorsteps. No city or village will be left behind. InshAllah!
