AI instead of UI The last few years radically changed how we think about digital products & product design process in general. What we are witnessing right now is a transition where AI is no longer just a feature; it is becoming the infrastructure of interaction. For decades, UI design was rooted in the concept of “Happy Path,” a series of static, linear screens (routes from A to B) designed to funnel users toward a goal. This concept was crazy in 2019, but it is highly relevant to the modern state of the product design process. And I strongly believe that it represents the future of UI design. We will move beyond the “AI chatbox" crutch Yes, many products today treat AI as a sidecar (think of Copilots or chatbots pinned to the side of a traditional dashboard), but this is a transitional phase. Why? Because adding a chat window to a 20-year-old software layout is like putting a jet engine on a horse-drawn carriage. That's why the future isn't "AI as an add-on"; it is AI as the Operating System. AI will power generative interfaces that are rooted in anticipatory design: UI won’t wait for a command; it will surface tools based on the user's current environmental context and historical behavior. This evolution changes the very nature of product design, and we will move away from designing pages/screens and toward designing systems of logic.

At Postman, we have adopted an AI-native mindset to product development. What does this mean in practice? Just like you can generate text with AI, Postman's Agent Mode can generate a UI as well. Case in point: we have added the ability to review, generate, and change diffs for important changes right inside agent mode's chat interaction. If the user trusts agent mode, they can continue in auto-mode, but for critical changes, they can have the agent mode inform the user, review what is changing, and then give the go ahead to approve. Designing an original AI Character. I wanted to give you a glimpse of what goes into the creation of the elaborate characters in my sci-fi world. Hint: It’s not a fast process. AI can spit out endless slop. That is, when you’re being lazy, because the lazier your prompting is, the more generic the outcome is. I’m not saying you have to write a novel and input every image and style reference on the internet, but you do need a curious and intentional eye with a generous helping of patience. So I made this high level walkthrough of my creative journey when designing a character with AI. I really take my time pushing and kit-bashing my creations before I’m happy with them. This process can take me hours. It took me about two full workdays to arrive at the complex design for this specific character. I solved building decks with AI agents — by giving them a CLI tool like Powerpoint or Google Slides. AI could already make a beautiful deck if you asked it to using Ant's pptx skill. The problem was working with it. If it made one alignment mistake, fixing it on one slide would break something on another, and it became a game of whack-a-mole. One time I spent two days playing AI roulette, hoping the next prompt would finally fix the thing, and ended up building the whole deck by hand because I was on a deadline. So I built Hands-on Deck. And the reason it works is that this isn't just a skill — this is PowerPoint. The actual application: PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, whatever you use. This is that, but for an agent, presented as a CLI. Every gesture you make in a deck app maps to a command. Click a box and type, drag a shape from here to there, look at a slide – agent can do it all in a command. And that changes how the agent behaves. With this CLI it works and thinks like a designer — it looks, makes an edit, looks again, makes another surgical edit. Compare that to Anthropic's pptx skill, built on the idea that Claude is a great programmer: it literally writes code to manipulate the deck, hand-editing XML and hoping it doesn't break anything else in the middle. The real test isn't creating something once — it's whether it can make surgical edits like you want. That's what I did in this video walkthrough and my claude crushed it! Check it out for yourself. Calls it “a tool” like stop-motion or CGI before and what ultimately matters is “imagination, originality” of whoever uses the tool: “I think AI — used in the right way — is a tool like any other tool. [The original] King Kong…was stop-motion and done by a person moving a rubber creature. Why shouldn't somebody on a computer using AI software be able to create their own imagery? They should. It's a tool. It's no different from many other tools that have existed over the years. But the other side of it is that it's always going to come down to the imagination and originality of the person feeding the instructions into the AI program. It's not that you're going to type in an instruction and it's going to generate your shot, and that's that. The question is: is it actually interesting? Is it funny? Is it imaginative? And are you going to stitch it together to make a narrative, a story? Some people will make really great films that way. Some people will do exactly the same process and their film will be crap, just like in the normal film industry.
