How many more people must be killed before non-Muslims admit we have a major Jihad problem? Islam isn't hijacked by extremists - it is what inspires them. Some people think helping others practice Islam in a balanced way is the same as watering it down. For certain fundamentalists, an easy ruling is treated like a sin. Real wisdom is not compromise. It is bringing people closer to Allah in a way that inspires growth without burnout. Islam itself is not the problem. The problem lies in harsh interpretations that push people away, when the deen was always meant to be lived with mercy, balance, and sustainability. Yes, parts of the religion may feel difficult, because true faith sometimes requires sacrifice and struggle. But difficulty is not the same as harshness nor will it always feel that way. And always remember wisdom is not the same as following our whims. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Make things easy for the people and do not make things difficult for them.” (Bukhari and Muslim). That is the balance of Islam: a path that challenges the ego, yet uplifts the soul, a faith of mercy that brings hearts back to Allah.

Matt Damon participated in Howard Zinn's great "The People Speak" series, and read out a great speech by Zinn about the importance of civil disobedience, which is as apt today as when he first wrote it in 1970: "I start from the supposition that the world is topsy-turvy, that things are all wrong, that the wrong people are in jail, and the wrong people are out of jail. That the wrong people are in power, and the wrong people are out of power. I start from the supposition that all we have to do is think about the state of the world today, and realize that things are all upside down. If you don't think, if you listen to TV, read scholarly things, you actually begin to think that things are not so bad. Or that just little things are wrong. But you have to get a little detached, and then come back and look at the world, and you are horrified. So we have to start from that supposition—that things are really topsy-turvy. And our topic is topsy-turvy: civil disobedience. As soon as you say the topic is civil disobedience, you are saying our problem is civil disobedience. That is not our problem…. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is the numbers of people all over the world who have obeyed the dictates of the leaders of their government and have gone to war, and millions have been killed because of this obedience.
