It’s true some late Soviet leaders had health issues—Brezhnev, Andropov, Chernenko weren’t exactly models of vitality. But the USSR had the Politburo: a collective leadership that functioned even if the top guy was sick, asleep, or drunk.

Churchill hypothetically assumed the possibility of a Soviet invasion of Western Europe after the withdrawal of American troops. At that time, a large number of Soviet troops were deployed in Europe, and there was an understanding that Stalin wanted to create a buffer zone there, so there was a real Soviet threat to Western Europe. In fact, the term Iron Curtain emerged then. It became commonly used thanks to Winston Churchill. Even then, he clearly saw the threat to Western democracy from the Soviet empire.
