At all our reintegration units the focus is on supporting the orphans as they transition back to the wild. For the female elephants this leads on to starting a family of their own. To date, we know of 77 calves born to elephants we’ve rescued and raised: their wild-living mothers choosing return, so that we might share in their joy. As adults, elephants sleep the least of any mammal, logging as little as two hours a day. But babies need rest — and lots of it! Sulwe, Lenny, and Zigi are just a few months old, requiring naps throughout the day. When they show signs of sleepiness, the entire herd stops and circles round, so they can rest safely and soundly. 2026's first wild-born calf made her debut and we are beyond smitten. Ex-orphan Arruba gave birth to her last Thursday – a perfect little girl who has been named Aura. She is our first grandcalf of 2026, born to an orphan we rescued, raised, and rewilded (as you'll have read, more have since followed!). We aren’t the ones who are smitten. Arruba is supported by her fellow orphans-turned-family-turned-aunties, including Mbegu, Pika Pika, Tagwa, and Mudanda. All rescued orphans, they found a family in our care – and now that family continues in the wild, where are raising the next generation of Kenya’s elephants together. A beautiful sunrise in Tsavo, with Mutara’s ex-orphan herd striding in from the bush. Every grown elephant you see here is an orphan we rescued, raised, and reintegrated back into the wild.
