As a beautiful family of elephants crosses the railway track at Madukkarai in Coimbatore, an AI-powered early warning system by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department ensures their safe passage, a sight that fills the heart with warmth. In a meticulously planned operation, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department relocated a wild tusker from O’Valley in the Gudalur region of the Nilgiris, a hotspot of recurring human elephant conflict. After weeks of monitoring and rehabilitation, the elephant was translocated somewhere in the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, a pristine habitat ideal for elephants. Led by the Chief Wildlife Warden along with Conservators, DFOs, veterinarians, ground staff and trained kumkis, the operation showcased precision, coordination across divisions, patience and professionalism. It ensured both human safety and wildlife conservation. The year ends on a heartwarming note for us at TN Forest Department, as our Foresters united a lost baby elephant with her mother and the herd after rescue in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve at Pollachi. The little calf was found searching for the mother when field teams spotted her. With the help of drones & experienced forest watchers the herd was located and the tiny calf was safely reunited. Teams are still on ground for monitoring. Our Elephants are checking out the Mobile Wildlife Forensic cum Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at a Tamil Nadu Forest Department elephant camp. An initiative of the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Forest Department, this first-of-its-kind facility is providing advanced veterinary care directly into the field. Equipped with a haematology analyser, serum biochemistry analyser, microscope, centrifuge, refrigerators and a -20°C deep freezer, it enables rapid on-site diagnosis, disease surveillance, forensic investigations and instant diagnostic reports. By bringing sophisticated diagnostics to the doorstep of elephants and other wildlife, it enables faster treatment, reduces the stress of transportation and improves the chances of survival. At 9:20 the camera sees an elephant herd gathering in a tea garden and will move towards the village. Control room sees the activity. Message is sent to nearby team. Team reaches there immediately and guide the elephants back to forest. Many such incidents are checked every night by our vigil teams. Some gets captured in a nice way. Like this one.

At 12:32 AM in night, our AI-enabled surveillance cameras detected a herd of elephants moving from the forest boundary towards a nearby village. The alert was instantly relayed to the Division Control Room, and within 15 minutes, nearby stationed rapid response team reached the spot and safely checked the elephants’ movement, preventing a potential human-elephant conflict. This is a routine effort. Every night, our frontline staff respond to multiple such alerts and public calls , protecting both people and wildlife. Utilising tech to solve problems. The area you see in the video was covered with a toxic invasive weed about a year ago. It now has lush green grass providing food to Gaurs, elephants, deer and other animals. One of the biggest threats to forests and wildlife around the world is from toxic invasives which are taking over our forests like wildfire. Urgent action is needed to remove these to safeguard forest biodiversity. In Tamil Nadu we have successfully reclaimed 493 Hectares of pristine forest land from Senna spectabilis a toxic invasive weed which kills native vegetation. In a collaborative effort the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Paper Ltd ( TN Govt PSU) has taken out around 21,178 tonnes of the weed from Forest areas of Mudhumalai Tiger Reserve and Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve and converted as 6000 MT of printing and writing paper ! Nearly 15 species of grass & 5 species of legumes have been found coming up from the area where Senna has been cleared now. A wild rice variety that was not reported from Mudumalai has also been found. From despair to hope and from struggle to triumph, this is the incredible story of a wild elephant mother's fight for survival backed by a dedicated and professional team of foresters and vets from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu Forest Department .The mother elephant was found sick and lying on ground with her 3 months old baby roaming around her in confusion and distress.The team consulted experts and vets and successfully lifted her with the help of a crane. She was kept supported by the crane for three days while being treated by Vets. Her baby joined the herd and other siblings roaming in the nearby forests visiting the mother in the night. Thanks to the treatment,she gained enough strength and was released to freedom in the wild today. We are monitoring her to keep an eye on her well being. A dedicated team of forest officers, patrolling staff, loco pilots, drone operators and control centre monitors works round the clock at Tamil Nadu’s AI-powered Elephant Control and Command Centre in Madukkarai in Coimbatore to keep elephants safe. In just over two and a half years, the system has facilitated around 9,481 safe elephant crossings ensuring Zero elephant deaths on Railway Tracks, demonstrating how technology, human vigilance and teamwork can come together to protect wildlife. The system has generated more than 7,116 real-time alerts for railway authorities and loco pilots, leading to 3,821 instances where trains were slowed down or stopped to allow elephants to cross safely. Beyond elephants, the system has also detected deer, gaurs and leopards, creating a comprehensive AI-enabled wildlife monitoring network. The Government of Tamil Nadu continues to strengthen the system. AI-powered drones have been deployed for wider landscape surveillance, extending monitoring beyond fixed thermal cameras and providing real-time situational awareness of elephant movements. No system can ever be perfect, and the worry never really goes away. But we must keep learning, improving and doing better. Today marks a milestone in our conservation journey for saving precious elephants as India's first project to prevent elephant deaths on Railway tracks gets launched at Madukkarai by TN Forest Dept. The AI and Machine learning enabled Surveillance project aims to prevent death of elephants on railways tracks.Launched by the Hon'ble Forest Minister at Madukkarai in Coimbatore today the project is a culmination of hard work of more than two years. Under the leadership of the Hon'ble CM Thiru M.K.Stalin the project has taken wings. Today, a dream comes true ! The Elephant whisperers of India get a village dedicated to them at Theppakadu Elephant Camp in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. India's first Mahout Village has 44 houses dedicated to every Mahout and Kavadi taking care of our precious elephants. Constructed at a cost of Rs 5.6 Crores by the TN Forest Department the village has lanes named after our elephants. From the design of the house to a basketball court to kids playground the village has been built in consultation with Mahouts. It is beautifully lit by solar lights and carefully protected with a solar fence. The 3rd synchronized Elephant Census was conducted across TN & Karnataka surveyed 3,261 sq. km with 2,043 staff in 26 Forest Divisions using scientific methods. Here are the highlights ● TN elephant population: 3,170 (up from 3,063) ● 76% in Nilgiris Eastern Ghats, followed by Anamalai & Coimbatore ● Western Ghats: 1,777 | Eastern Ghats: 1,345 ● Highest density: Udhagai, MTR – 1.35/sq. km ● 73% in 5 key divisions Kudos to the teams including the forest staff, experts and volunteers working tirelessly for conservation of our gentle giants 💪 #TNForest #ElephantConservation #wildlifeweek2025 IUCN IUCN_forests WWF-India

Timely Rescue and Care for an Injured Leopard in Ananthapuram As part of the H.A.N.U.M.A.N Wildlife Rescue Initiative, a female Leopard (Panthera pardus) was safely rescued near Malapanagudi Village, Kalyandurg Range (Ananthapuram Division), after being found weak and in need of urgent care. Acting on instructions of senior forest authorities, AP Forest Department teams promptly secured the animal and shifted it through RRRT vehicle to Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park, Tirupati for specialized veterinary examination, treatment, and rehabilitation. This coordinated response reflects the commitment of field staff and veterinary teams towards swift, scientific, and compassionate wildlife rescue and care.
