The area is highly prone to collision of trains with elephants as about 130 trains pass two railway tracks everyday. Close to 1,000 elephants cross these two tracks in a year. From 2008 till date 11 elephants have lost their lives on these tracks after colliding with trains. Railways have set a speed limit still this being a ghat road the speed can not be limited beyond what is already fixed moreover elephants can come on tracks suddenly in large herds. The system therefore is designed taking into consideration all these factors. #MadukkaraiElephantProject

A Control room has been set up on site in Madukkarai. This is connected to 12 surveillance towers around the raikway track. Each tower has twin thermal night vision cameras to capture images of elephants as they approach railway tracks. The AI and ML system will generate alerts to reach wireless sets on railway stations so that loco drivers could be alerted. The alerts are also generated on mobile phones, hooters and luminous boards. This will enable all concerned to take immediate action to prevent trains colliding with elephants #MadukkaraiElephantProject

The alert mechanism has been divided into three Zones Red Orange and Yellow based on the distance elephants may reach on tracks. Red being closest to tracks. Each zone will have a different system of alerts. #MadukkaraiElephantProject

I completely support this, because madhukarai is very prone to elephants accidentally colliding with various trains in the last several years..i hope this AI tracking and alerting technology will Help the TN forest department officials in coimbatore to avert the 🐘 accidents..💪

Excellent news for the sweet elephants of Tamilnadu. I hope other states can also take up such initiatives soon. India is the last bastion of Asian elephants in larger numbers since in other Asian countries, the numbers have drastically reduced. Lead the way Tamilnadu.
