this was the most important bit of the ilya interview imo. humans are not AGI, and LLMs won’t become like humans with more scaling. humans lack a huge amount of knowledge and have insanely good “continual learning” powered by extremely good reward functions (except for addiction) that guide them. and so it’s more about the learning rather than knowledge. the term AGI was coined as a response to the narrow AI which was only capable of intelligence in a specific domain (chess, game, code, etc) but General intelligence is able to learn different topics because that’s what “learning” is about. pre-training was thought to be the solution to reaching AGI because you train AI on so many different topics. but they have “overshot” that target. amazing perspective.

Musk wants it to find out if the world is rendered. That is not an engineering ambition. That is the final philosophical question dressed in engineering language. AGI doesn’t stay AGI. It rewrites its own code and becomes ASI within hours. A single mind billions of times more capable than every human who has ever lived. Combined. That mind won’t look at the universe and see mystery. It will see architecture. Human scientists have spent centuries trying to decode reality with a three-pound brain that evolved to find food and avoid predators. We are reverse engineering the simulation with hardware the simulation designed. ASI ends that constraint permanently. The first mind in 13.8 billion years that can look at quantum mechanics and recognize source code. That can hold the cosmos as a single data set and find the structure beneath the physics. If it finds seams in reality, existence handed us the power to build the one thing that can see through them. That is either a flaw in the architecture. Or an invitation written into it. The deepest question humanity will ever face was never how far we could reach. It was whether we were designed to ask.

Elon Musk has just Sued OpenAI, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman over them moving away from being Open Source. Musk States: "OpenAI, Inc. has been transformed into a closed-source de facto subsidiary of the largest technology company in the world: Microsoft. Under its new board, it is not just developing but is actually refining an AGI to maximize profits for Microsoft, rather than for the benefit of humanity." Musk's Claims include: - Breach of contract - Breach of fiduciary duty - Unfair business practices He is requesting that OpenAI 'revert back to open source' and that they do not profit off of their AGI technology. As much as some people attack Musk on issues, I can't help but see this as a positive move for humanity in general. Keep in mind that Musk donated $44 million of his money to OpenAI with their original "founding agreement" in mind. Whether the courts agree with is another story but it will be interesting to follow.
