Windows is just files as well. You are just restricted from accessing it via an API, but the OS is still files.

Files Files Everywhere!

That was the first sentence of my university professor at Programming in Linux course, lon time ago ๐

Someone should clean up all these messy files, ๐ All bare metal electronics.. count electrons ๐ platitudes, yay.. ๐

Windows, almost everything is a database. Linux, everything is a file. Guess which one is easier to fix and maintain.... I love Linux.

until ioctl shows up and the file abstraction starts leaking fast

files are just pointers to pointers

Thatโs what makes @Linux the GOAT OS!!!

Both Linux and Plan 9 say "everything is a file." Plan 9 takes this rule to the extreme. In Linux, you use many special commands to do things like control hardware or network settings. In Plan 9, you control everything by reading and writing files. Linux, was inspired by Plan 9

I learned a lot of Unix back in the day (Solaris actually) by browsing the bin directory and then typing "man" followed by whatever I saw in there. That's way more useful than piping binaries to the screen, LOL.

Whatโs the name of the original yt video

No, not 100% of everything in Linux or major Unix derivatives is a file. That OS would be Plan 9. As someone else pointed out, there are IOCTLs, but also network devices and I'm probably leaving a few others out for Linux. And others for other kernels.

An old friend of mine, decades ago now, used to always say of Linux: "Everything is a file, and files are everything."

Let's see you open gsettings and systemctl files

What was that at the end ?? ๐คฃ

This is such a good Video to watch. Thanks for your videos!

What do you use to write over the screen during a screenshare?

O barba รฉ brabo.

bro we really appreciate you, this playlist was awsome๐

Same with sales. The call is the funnel. Everything runs through it. You build on Linux?

But everything is always a file naw

stolen but "it means you are precisely one misinput away from piping your mouse input to your audio driver and summoning Satan"

wait so does that mean the kernel itself is just a super file or something?

/dev/random is a file too, should I pipe this video there @NetworkChuck ? Better than /dev/null.

That's why it's easy. ๐ฅ๐ฅ

does that "everything is a file" idea actually save you time day to day, or is it more just a nice mental model to have?

It really helps to know that

Everything on linux is a file descriptor, not a file per se
