I predicted this AI mess 3 yrs ago on Shawn Ryan #62. They thought I was exaggerating then:

Exaggeration is a tax on legitimacy. The stronger position is precision. Say exactly what you can do. Prove it. Let everyone else oversell.

Very principled thinking. This is a big reason why the“fake it til you make it” mindset can be dangerous.

Same rule for studies. Inflate the effect size and the whole claim becomes easy to kill. A small, true number lasts longer than a launch headline.

This was a well-crafted way of explaining something that I’ve struggled to find the words for but can seemingly be mapped onto a lot of things. And the opposite also seems true. I have partners and colleagues to this day, whose word I don’t question because of the trust equity they’ve built from being transparent in ways that have sometimes even undercut themselves. “In the way you do anything, you do everything.”

While I personally agree with this, the market doesn't. See Tesla and Elon Musk's constantly exaggerated timeline claims. Many other examples out there.

Tim, context matters. In fiction, a little hyperbole builds the world. In finance, it's just a fast track to getting sued by the SEC.

This is a problem with many businesses, they make a mountain out of a molehill.
