China is entering the next phase of the space race: the new bottleneck is launch capacity! The world can manufacture around 2,400 satellites a year, but rockets can launch only about 1,800 satellites into orbit — leaving a gap of roughly 600 satellites every year. Even SpaceX, which controls around 65% of global launch capacity, is struggling to keep up, with some rideshare slots booked well into 2027. And this is where China has a major opportunity. With rapid advances in reusable rockets, satellites, space-based internet, and launch infrastructure, expanding launch capacity will become the next decisive battlefield of the space industry. Whoever controls the rockets controls the road to space — and China is moving fast to dominate that road.

Taiga is powered by the company’s proprietary 3D-printed Hadfield Mk III liquid rocket engine, and the mission is named "Getting Screeched In". Launch the North represents Canada’s most significant investment in sovereign space launch. As a part of the government’s $182.6 million investment in sovereign space launch, DND and CAF aim to secure Canada's strategic autonomy in space, reduce dependence on foreign launch providers, and position Canada as a global leader in commercial and defence-oriented space launch. Canada's moment has arrived. What distinguishes NordSpace is the depth of its vertical integration. We design and manufacture our own engines and vehicles, develop and operate our own spaceport, build and fly our own satellites, and invest in the broader Canadian space ecosystem. This end-to-end architecture stands unique in Canada, inspired by industry leaders such as SpaceX and Rocket Lab, and constitutes the foundational infrastructure upon which a durable, truly sovereign Canadian space industry can be built. At the centre of our architecture is Tundra, powered by our in-house designed and manufactured 3D printed Hadfield engines and capable of delivering 500+ kg to LEO and 350+ kg to SSO. In its Tundra+ configuration, this grows to 1,100 kg to LEO and 850 kg to SSO, with a direct scaling path to our Titan medium-lift vehicle targeting 5,000+ kg to LEO. It also offers the largest safety distances of any spaceport in Canada and highest approved launch cadence, lending to our medium-lift future. Our Atlantic Spaceport Complex (ASX) in Newfoundland and Labrador is the only purpose-built commercial orbital launch facility in Canada and one of the most strategically advantaged launch sites in the western hemisphere. The ASX supports launch inclinations of 44 to 105 degrees over the Atlantic Ocean, the widest range available from any Canadian site. It also offers the largest safety distances of any spaceport in Canada and highest approved launch cadence, lending to our medium-lift future. The ASX received its landmark environmental approval from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and is already under rapid construction with its first launch planned this spring of our Taiga rocket. This award will ultimately lead to the creation of 134 direct jobs by 2028, growing to 650+ by 2032, with 1,600+ indirect and induced jobs across Canada's industrial base as we scale to medium-lift. Here’s why $RKLB just spent ~$8B acquiring $IRDM. Rocket Lab wants to own the network, spectrum and recurring revenue layer once satellites are in orbit which is why this deal is really about vertical integration as Neutron comes online. Once Rocket Lab can launch Iridium satellites on Neutron then it internalizes a cost that used to flow to third-party launch providers making the deal way more accretive over time as Neutron comes online. What I like is that Iridium also brings something Rocket Lab stack has lacked which is recurring, high-margin service revenue tied to global connectivity, direct-to-device and government communications. The space economy is splitting into companies that can launch and refresh their own networks and companies that have to rent access to orbit. $SPCX already proved which side wins because if you own both launch and the network then you control the cost structure, refresh cycle and margin stack in a way third-party launch customers cannot match. Launch gets you to orbit but connectivity is what you monetize once you're there and the companies that own both the launch layer and the network become the platforms of the space economy.

At about T-8 hours before Starship Flight 13’s third attempt to launch, what are the conditions out at the launch site? What does the weather look like? And, what is it like to be at the launch site and Starbase about 8 or so hours from a launch? Today I talk about all of this and provide some updates (narration & visuals) on the construction around the launch site too & why much of this is necessary. Oh, and a reminder too. If you have ever thought about coming out to Starbase and experience something you can literally not do anywhere else in the world (being at an active rocket launch site with a fully stacked rocket just hours before a launch all up close), then you need to plan on doing so sooner than later. These opportunities may not last forever, and indeed some restrictions continue to be added over time.
