Exit velocity, bat speed, and all the data matter. At some point, you do need to hit certain physical thresholds to compete at the highest levels of baseball. But once you get around players who are all talented, the separator usually isn’t another 2 mph of bat speed. It’s... mental toughness. Resilience. Confidence. The ability to handle failure. Having a consistent approach. Showing up every day. Competing when things aren’t going your way. The numbers might get you noticed. Your mindset is what determines how far you go. I’ve seen plenty of players with elite metrics fail, and plenty of players with average metrics maximize every ounce of their ability because of who they were between the ears. Train the body. "You want to give your players information, yet, they have to react." "In baseball 70% of the hits are in front of the outfield. So if you train to hit them over the outfielders, you're training for 30%." Says he doesn't want players overly focused on metrics and analytics -- need to go compete at some point.

So what is the separator? 1. Are you working on the right things with your coaches that are going to help you be a better player working your team and overall 2. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU PUT IN THE GYM ON YOUR OWN. This is a HUGE SEPARATOR because this time isn’t dependent on anyone and is unlimited in how much you do. Almost every player I’ve worked with that has made a BIG JUMP has put in extra time on their own. It’s not only because of the work, but it also helps players understand their game better and gives them a bigger investment in their development. Each game is an opportunity for players to learn how to do that. Yes, they will fail, but they will learn. And ultimately they will be a better player because of it. Shouting instructions from the stands only shows that you don’t believe they have the ability to make adjustments, and you aren’t good with failing so they can grow.
