Coaching from the stands is disrespectful to … Your kid!! The best players can figure out solutions on their own, they don’t need help from the stands. Each game is an opportunity for players to learn how to do that. Yes, they will fail, but they will learn. And ultimately they will be a better player because of it. Shouting instructions from the stands only shows that you don’t believe they have the ability to make adjustments, and you aren’t good with failing so they can grow.

There are a lot of players that work year round on skill development but they don’t learn and/or be held accountable to the sacrifice, focus, energy, effort it takes to be a winning player for their team.

I’ve had conversations with a lot of youth hockey coaches and program directors that are scared to coach their top players hard and cater to their parents for fear of them leaving the team and organization. At the end of the day, not holding your best players or their parents accountable is such a disservice to the kid. They aren’t learning valuable lessons about effort and accountability that are necessary traits to achieve higher levels in the sport.

#Vikings EVP Rob Brzezinski says drafting for team needs rather than best player available is the “biggest reason” why some players fail to line up to their full potential: “I think it’s the biggest reason why a lot of players fail in this business… You force a need. And for a lot of reasons it doesn’t work out, and you pass on a player of higher ability for a position of need… it may be old school, but if you get your board set right, and look for the best player available, I think it’s going to lead you down the right path.” (Via Vikings YouTube)

Max Levchin explains why B-players hire C-players The co-founder of PayPal and Affirm reflects on the famous Steve Jobs insight that A-players hire A-players, and B-players hire C-players: “It’s profoundly true. But there should be an asterisk explaining why this is true. And the reason for this is fear.” A-players love working with other A-players because they know it will make them better. They want other A-players who challenge them and will tell them when their work isn’t good. Most B-players are net positive too, but as Max argues, some are fearful and will say: “If I have too many B-players or A-players around, I will look terrible and it’ll be very obvious that I’m just not that good. So the way to fix this is for me to become a manager and hire a bunch of people who aren’t very good at all so that I’ll look like the tallest mushroom.” Max continues: “That is the real danger of B-players. Having people who are perfectly willing to do good work day-in and day-out is not the worst thing in the world. There’s plenty of things that A-players will turn their nose from because it’s just not that challenging. B-players are very good for that [type of work]. And a lot of B-players will over time grind their way to being A-players, so you’re investing in their future and they know it, and that’s also positive. That means they have the ability to glance at a board and instantly know whether it's hopeless or if they should keep playing. Without this ability, the only way to know if a move is good is to play out every possible game from that point - completely intractable. But the ability is clearly trainable in humans. So it should be possible to get a neural net to learn it. And if you have a good enough neural net, you can use it to ignore moves that will definitely make you lose. Suddenly search becomes tractable.

Players showing up for the first time at tryouts, it is very unlikely they make the team for any program that has a culture and set expectations for their program throughout the year. JV OR VARSITY This question is going to come up a ton across the country this month. So many players are on the cusp of playing varsity or jv. There are so many variables to what is best for the kid and the program, but every case should be looked at individually. Some players would benefit from staying down and having. A ton of responsibility, while others need the daily practice reps over the game reps. Ultimately the goal is that the kid is at their best in the future years to help the program be their best.

WHAT DOES ‘HE’S A DIVISION 1 PLAYER’ MEAN? The landscape of college basketball is different today than it has ever been. One of the good things within all the chaos of college basketball is that a lot of the schools will be going to 15 Scholarships. Which means practice players will most likely be getting scholarships. This is a great avenue for players that are solid, that want to D1 experience and are hoping to leverage it for academics and in to their chosen career. I do believe though that players that are capable of playing at a lower D1 level, D2 or D3 are going to get yelled in to taking one of these last scholarships and end up wasting away years of playing ability bc they place such a heavy emphasis on D1. Again, no right or wrong, just a thought.

The government is essentially the referee, making sure that there's fair play, that the rules are sensible, and allowing the players on the field to play the game. And what happens over time is that the government keeps growing, and at a certain point, you have more referees than players on the field. Then, the game is not good. I'm not saying you don't need referees, but you don't want the referees to outnumber the players. That would be silly, but that's often what happens. So, just make sure that fair games are being played, that there are sensible rules, and don't get in the way of the players. Telegram founder Pavel Durov on what separates A Players from B Players “I can recall a few instances in my career where firing an engineer actually resulted in an increase in productivity,” Telegram founder Pavel Durov begins. He gives an example of two Android engineers building an app that are having a hard time hitting deadlines: “You think, ‘I probably have to hire a third engineer.’ But then you notice that one of [the engineers] is really weird — falling behind schedule, complaining, not assuming responsibility — and you ask, ‘What if I just fired this person?’ Then you fire this person, and in a few weeks you realize you never needed a third engineer. The problem was this guy who created more issues and problems than he solved. It’s so counterintuitive because in developing tech projects, you tend to think that you just throw more people into something and things get solved miraculously.” Pavel continues: “The other thing that people don’t realize is how demotivating working with a B Player is. Everyone can tell if the other engineer they’re working with is really competent. If the person is asking the wrong questions and they keep lagging behind, at a certain point if you’re an A Player, you get get this dissatisfaction and feeling that you are not able to realize your full potential and accomplish what you’re really meant to accomplish because of this person working next to you (or pretending to work next to you).” Pavel reflects on what it is exactly that separates these B Players from A Players: “In some cases it’s not because the person is lazy . . . It’s not about experience. More often it’s about natural ability and persistence. In 90% of cases, it’s just the inability to focus on one task for an extended period of time. Not everybody has this ability.
