Hm, I am skeptical. It's basically an expensive gimmick (similar to console headsets that no one buys). For the same price, you can buy a pretty nice MacBook Air + Studio Display to get some actual work done 🤔

I was waiting for this moment A LONG time. Few years ago, when everybody was talking about VR I was always pushing for AR as AR has the biggest impact on our lifes. Looking at the size, it is clearly Gen1 and thats fine. However, this will limit it to homes and office. Yet, enough sales to be generated with it. Seems it still takes a few years to have wearables in size that you will wear it outside!

Vision Pro is impressive if the final product works as seamlessly as the demo without any headaches. It’s the next era that compliments our current ways of communicating with computers. Over time the headset will likely get smaller and could connect to your mind wirelessly.

Jensen: "So the question is how do I convey my vision to the employees and how do we convey a sense of urgency? First of all, you convey your vision the good old-fashioned way. And it's about telling a story. I'm not the best storyteller in the world, and I'm not the best, I don't enjoy public speaking, actually. And if you were to give me a choice right now between doing this versus just answering one of your emails, and I'll give you all my email address, you could all send me an email, and I'd be glad to respond to it. I'd rather do that. You know, I'm still an engineer, and I'm introverted by design, I guess. And I don't find myself particularly articulate. And so I don't enjoy the process of public speaking. But you have to force yourself to do it. It's for a good reason. It's for a good cause. I have to admit that speaking to my employees or speaking to NVIDIA's employees is the single most intimidating thing that I do. It freaks me out. This soldiering training is the most impressive and immersive I've ever tried. It is 10x better than a YouTube tutorial video. It really allowed me to see the procedure from all the points of view, and even get super close to get the details. It is a collaboration between @gracia_vr and Imperial College London: they recorded a soldering session with Gaussian Splatting Videos (4DGS), so that you can enjoy it from your VR headset. You can see the action happening in front of you; you can pause and re-watch what you need, change the point of view, get closer, get more distant. And the quality with which it has been shot is impressive: I enjoyed this experience with my DELL Pro Max Tower T2 with NVIDIA Pro RTX 6000, and I could really see all the small details of the PCB that was being soldered! I was really impressed by it. But I also noticed some drawbacks. First of all, some scenes have artifacts that make seeing the details of the PCB hard. I think when it comes to training involving small details, the capture and reproduction of the splat should be flawless. Then, as much as I loved it as a passive experience, I would have liked to have also some sort of practice session in VR. The power of VR is to let you learn by doing in full safety, and this kind of training does not exploit it. But maybe the best way to enjoy it would be in MR, where you have this training video close to a real workbench where you do the actual soldering while following the tutorial. Gaussian Splat can really revolutionize training: this kind of recording is much better than any flatscreen experience, and more accurate than any 3D CGI recostruction. I suggest you give it a go at this experience in the Gracia app (it's free). The apple scene in "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" (2011) wasn't in the script. Nuri Bilge Ceylan got the idea when he was walking on a day off from the shoot. He saw the apple travelling around by chance. It was a scene where two people were talking and Ceylan felt it would be better if he could make it a bit more interesting. He used it as a metaphor for human life. Ceylan said, "That was not in the script—I found that idea when I was walking around on an off day during the shoot. I saw this apple traveling around, by chance. It was a suitable place—the two of them were talking, and showing them for a long time in a static frame, two people in the darkness, talking—you can inject something in that. For that scene, I wasn’t sure whether I should use that shot or not. But when I put the dialogue over it, I liked it. I wanted to show that the fate of the apple is not so different from our fate. Everything created in the world has the same destiny—animals, trees, humans all have the same kind of destiny. In some way, the apple represents human life, as it goes to rest with the other, rotting apples. Actually, in the rest of that shot, the apple moves back into the stream, but we didn’t use that." When asked the reason why he stopped the shot there, Ceylan replied, "Because to shoot the apple [as it keeps] moving creates more hope; it’s not realistic. Chamath: Two terms you need to pay attention to in AI are Prefill and Decode “There's two terms that I think you're going to hear a ton about over these next few years.” “The first term is prefill, and the next is decode.” “What prefill and decode are, are two very distinct ways of how models think, and how a model goes through the process of answering a question that you ask it.” “And so when you send a prompt to AI, what happens is that the model processes it. This is called the reading phase or prefill.” “It reads your entire prompt all at once. And then it does a bunch of math, calculates all these relationships between all the words, and it stores them in temporary memory.” “The problem is that this is really compute bound. So it requires massive brute force. And Nvidia GPUs crush here.” “And their architecture is designed for massive parallel processing, which makes them really amazing at digesting these long prompts.” “So the problem just gets bigger and bigger, Nvidia just completely dominates.” “But the next phase though, this critical phase, the decode phase, is the writing phase, right?” “So the model starts to generate a response, you ask it a question and its response, one token at a time.” “And then to pick the next token to pick the next word, it has to look back at everything it has said already so that it doesn't hallucinate.” “The problem is that this is incredibly memory bandwidth constrained.” “And in our architecture, a long time ago, we made these design decisions from day one.” “And so what we did was we took a very different architectural approach, we took a very conservative process technology. Apple Vision Pro: My Initial Impressions I agree with some others. This is one of the most impressive pieces of tech I’ve ever used, but it's not perfect. The Good: • The eye tracking and hand gestures are simply incredible. The accuracy is like 99%. It’s quite intuitive and feels very natural. You can put your hands almost anywhere and it'll sense them. • I’m not exaggerating when I say Apple’s immersive videos made for the Vision Pro literally make you feel like you’re there in person. I felt like I was literally in the room with Alicia Keys while she sang, or traversing 3,000 feet above Norway’s breathtaking fjords while walking on a rope. My only complaint is that while Apple Immersive Videos are 180-degree 3D 8K recordings, they are still a little blurry. • You can use the Vision Pro while lying down in bed in complete darkness and the hand gestures will still work just fine (just like FaceID does in the dark). • In 2013 Apple introduced TouchID. In 2017 FaceID. With Vision Pro, Apple has introduced OpticID. It scans your iris and unlocks your Vision Pro when you put it on. It’s incredibly quick and accurate. And like FaceID, it's secure. It's what you will use to pay for things on the device as well. • I didn’t experience any vertigo, dizziness, etc while using the device. • I'm a bit of a display nerd. For the first time outside of a theatre, Avatar The Way of Water feels true to the directors creative intent. High frame rate (HFR) wasn’t possible in any other device. The 3D is exactly like the theatre. I went to a dolby cinema to watch it originally, and the Vision Pro gets it about as close to a theatre video quality experience as you can get. • The sound quality is really good. The spacial audio is very convincing. • The Vision Pro is heavy, but I found myself not caring all that much if i used the dual loop headband. • I was skeptical of the productivity side of the Vision pro, but wow does the mac virtual display work insanely well. You can easily edit videos or browse the web. • You can complain about plenty of things, but built quality is not one of them. It's really good and solid. The device feels very dense. • Neck strain was not an issue • I watched John Wick in one of the immersive environments, and the movie was reflecting onto the water perfectly. It’s was incredible. I'm not joking when i saw it literally felt like I was watching a movie on a 4K HDR screen in then middle of the wilderness. • Battery life is fine most of the time. The Not So Good: • The app ecosystem just isn’t there yet, which is understandable. That will happen over time, but currently there are only 600 apps built for the Vision. For developer, It doesn't make sense to make a custom Vision Pro app when there are only ~200k users in the ecosystem. • The field of view is kinda of small, which is disappointing, and sometimes a little distracting. It's not terrible, but I wish the FOV was bigger. • The passthrough video is dissapointinly low quality, though it’s still better than anything else on the market. You can’t read your small text on your phone. Colors are muted, and it's a little jittery. Future versions will be better no doubt. • It is sort of an isolating device. I almost guarantee you future versions of the Vision Pro will be able to connect with one another so two people can be looking at the same virtual safari window, movie, etc. • Price: It's expensive. • As I said above, while heavy, the weight of the VP was not an issue for me, but that doesn't mean I don't want it to be lighter. It does press against your face pretty hard, which can cause minor cheek area fatigue. Future versions will no doubt be lighter. Final Thoughts: Going back to my Mac felt weird. It suddenly felt like a technology of the past. If you have the money and want to be an early adopter, you’ll be happy with the Vision Pro. But I have to say, the second or third generation of this device, I think, will be better and cheaper, so it’s probably worth waiting for that. While it’s one of the greatest pieces of tech I’ve ever tried, I can’t see myself using this in my daily life yet, and for $3,500, I should be able to envision that. I'm going to give it a few more days, but I'll likely be returning it. The app ecosystem needs to improve and expand a lot. That's ultimately what will make or break this thing's success. Apple knocked it out of the park engineering this thing. It's mind blowing, but if i'm already mind blown, Imagine how good future versions will be.

One question that's been on my mind for years now is: could we use regular multimodal LLMs not necessarily trained for robotics to do the high level robotics intelligence part that VLAs and WAMs attempt to do? The latest explosion of powerful opensource multi-modal LLMs has, IMO, begun to make this possible due both to intelligence and speed. This is GLM 5.3 Flash, which has vision understanding, but isn't meant to be a VLA/VLM/WAM/robotics model at all, controlling an XGO mini wheeled robot quadruped with an arm & gripper. GLM 5.3F simply has access to the robot's high level SDK for controlling movement, arm joints, open/close gripper...etc. It analyzes the frames from the camera and makes adjustments all on its own to solve the task. Nothing was trained here, nothing fine-tuned for this task. Z AI did not make this model for robots and tbh I think they're surprised this works when I talk to them about it! This also works quite well with DSV4F + a vision capable model like Qwen 3.8 27B. I havent tried JUST Qwen 3.8 27B, but I'm sure it works too. I like the "logic" to be a model that's as fast as possible (but still intelligent). There's also an experimental vision version of DSV4F, I'm confident that'll work too and might even be better bc the full loop might be the fastest of all with this model. An obvious question you might wonder is: well why not use VLA or VLM? The hard part about robotics isn't object detection, that's long solved. This also isn't a solution for gait/locomotion...yet, but I actually don't think this is far away either and I've done some experimentation with LLMs in this space in the past and it does show promise. It might actually already be here for quadrupeds, since you dont need super fast IMU readings to maintain balance. I've also tried many of the larger, more generalist, VLAs that you should be able to use with popular robots and tbh there are just so many edge cases that make things hard and not work. You gotta get the camera, lighting, task, everything *just right* or the demo fails. This is for the actual hard part in robotics right now: intelligence, logic, and planning for all the ways the real world just simply isn't perfect. I've trained VLAs. They're super finicky and you're always running into sim2real issues, especially around the camera. You also have to build the whole training pipeline in a simulator, and, if everything does work, you still just have a robot that does this 1 single thing after weeks of work. If you use teleop, this overcomes the "2real" problem, but now you need to painstakingly collect teleop data, and it's only good at that specific task and that particular robot. There is a growing set of egocentric training data for "general purpose" VLAs and world action models (for humanoid form factors), but I'm really starting to wonder: Why? I think we might just sidestep this whole area of research entirely. I didn't need any training data or special environment to work with this quadruped and arm to do the task I was after. This particular quadruped and arm doesn't even exist in the wild yet really, it's a demo build from a company launching it on kickstarter, so it's not like this robot's data exists in the LLM to any real extent. I think this is cool as heck that this works and I am interested to see just how far I can push it. Also this marks the first time that I've finally got a generalist solution to a task I've been trying to solve ever since I became a dad of twins: pick up toys off the ground. This is a big day!

Apple just made every tech giant that went all in on AI look like clowns. For 12 months straight, Apple was the "biggest loser" of the AI era. Its AI team kept losing people. Its Siri overhaul kept getting delayed. And every headline said the same thing: Apple missed the biggest technology shift in a generation. But turns out, the OPPOSITE is actually the case... Apple passed Nvidia to briefly become the most valuable company on Earth again, worth around $4.88 trillion. Apple is up nearly 23% this year. Nvidia is up just 7.3%. Apple is now the best performer in the entire Mag 7. And when you look at why, it's almost funny. Apple won by REFUSING to spend the money everyone said it had to spend. Look at what the rest of Big Tech committed to the AI buildout this year: - Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft are spending more than $665 billion combined - Apple is spending about $13.5 billion - That is nearly 50x less than its rivals For a year, that gap was "proof" that Apple had fumbled it. Then the AI trade broke, and the company with no giant AI bill suddenly looked like the smartest one in the room. Apple never took on the risk. It never borrowed the billions to build data centers, and it never had to promise Wall Street that all that spending would pay off later. So when the trade cracked this week, Apple had nothing to crack. It still runs on iPhones and a services business that keeps setting records, not on a bet about AI revenue that has not shown up yet. And the crack itself was real: A Chinese startup called Moonshot dropped a new model that rivals the best from OpenAI and Anthropic, and it messed up the whole market in a single day. Investors are already calling it a Kimi moment, a rerun of the DeepSeek shock that hit these same stocks last year. The Philadelphia semiconductor index fell into a bear market, down 20% from its June peak. The Nasdaq 100 had its worst week in almost a month. Money that was chasing chips is now hiding in the one megacap with almost no exposure to the thing that just blew up. And the doubts are reaching the top now too: Societe Generale's head of US equity strategy warned this week that the biggest AI spenders are still burning cash so fast that investors are openly asking whether the spending ever pays off. What happens next: Nobody knows if this holds. Apple could lose the top spot again by Monday, and the AI bulls will tell you the buildout always looks reckless right before it pays off. But something bigger happened this week... For one day, the market stopped rewarding the biggest spender and started rewarding the one that kept its wallet shut. If that keeps happening, every board that bet the company on AI has a real problem. And the company that got mocked for doing the least became the safest place to hide from the trade it skipped. Here's more analysis on the Apple and Google deal to make a new kind of Siri, after I had a cup of coffee. This is what OpenAI is doing: they're making a variety of new products and going after Apple. Apple didn't want to give OpenAI any more data to help a potential new competitor. The real problem for this OpenAI effort is that we're about to move to glasses. People don't believe me that we're about to move to glasses, but you should, because I just got back from CES and there was a ton of glasses there. For OpenAI to really get somewhere, they need to add a camera to an earphone. While I don't see that in this latest report, I won't be shocked to see a camera show up somewhere eventually. It is cameras that add understanding of the real world, which can lead to many new features that Apple's current AirPods Pro can't match. I believe Apple is developing such a product to go with their glasses, which makes a lot of sense. Also, Google's AI models are better at multimodality; this means they can use cameras in a much better way than even OpenAI's models can. This is why in Silicon Valley robotics companies, a lot of them use Google Gemini: because robots need multimodality. Apple's glasses, which are expected in 2027, have some significant advantages over the others. First, they have eye sensors in them, so it knows where the user is looking. It also can tell what the user is touching, holding, or gesturing towards. This new capability will give Siri a significant parlor trick: it will let Siri answer questions that no other search engine has been able to answer before. But the real reason I'm still bullish on Apple's glasses isn't technology—it's content. Apple has NBA rights and Formula One (among others) and a really great studio system, which has produced one of the biggest hits of the last six months. Pluribus. Apple also, because of its privacy stance, has a significant lead in consumer trust. Because of its retail stores, it also has a significant lead in the ability to: 1. Show people glasses 2. Get them fit properly 3. Get people trained On Saturday, I went to the main Apple store in Cupertino and watched one of the classes that they teach every few hours in an Apple store. The store was packed with people watching the class on a huge screen in the middle of the store. Apple has dramatically changed retail because of its stores, which gives it the most trusted brand in the business and gives it distribution to most of the world's richest people. While OpenAI has almost a billion users, it is unclear whether those users will switch ecosystems from Apple to OpenAI. Even if OpenAI's AI and devices can do a few more things, I'm not so sure anybody's going to care when Apple has very capable headphones that match up with their iPhones and has the world's richest people addicted to the Apple ecosystem (me included). Here is one of the secret Chinese suites at CES, which makes a series of glasses to sell to other brands. This gives you a sense of how fast the glasses world is moving. AI needs to not just tell you what it's seeing, but it needs to show you things to really make the solution complete. Also, Apple usually picks a much better design than anyone else. Because it's such a luxury brand, it can charge more than anybody else and be more profitable. I don't see anyone else being able to put together the whole solution the way Apple can. Therefore, I am still very bullish on Apple making a dramatic announcement about glasses sometime in the next 24 months. At CES, though, it's clear that many manufacturers will try. XREAL 👓 just got $100 million of funding to continue its glasses development, and officials of the company told me it will release its Android XR based glasses later this year. Short version: AI is coming to wearables in a big way, and Apple will do what it always does: come in late to the market and redefine it when it enters. It still has all the pieces to put together the puzzle, even though it doesn't have its own LLM so had to do a deal with Google for that. Yeah, others will be earlier to the market, and will win some buyers because of that, but buyers like me know that and will be happy to put down our other ones to buy Apple because of its advantages. With one big caveat: Apple has to deliver an amazing pair of glasses, and maybe a headphone with a camera, to keep the competition from taking its lunch. Also, behind the scenes there is a big patent battle brewing. Apple has quite a few, but I talked with Ann Greenberg at CES, who started Gracenote. She says she has several patents that will enable a large company to force others to license their technology and that she's already in final stages of selling those patents to a big company. All the big companies have patent portfolios they can use against each other, and particularly smaller, newer, competitors. Microsoft alone has dozens of patents it bought to start off its Hololens efforts, which it gave up on, but Microsoft still has almost 1,000 lawyers who would love to go after other companies for licensing deals. Plus, Google-funded Magic Leap has about 1,000 patents, so it'll be interesting to see if anyone buys the remnants of that company. The question is: can anyone disrupt Apple? Especially OpenAI?
