Peter Alphonse says, “In a reply to Anbumani Ramadoss, MP from PMK party, the Jal Shakti minister has answered in the Parliament that Tamil Nadu and other lower riparian states need not give any consent for the proposed Mekedatu Dam to be constructed by the Karnataka government, that is a stand which is very much detrimental to the interest of the lower riparian states, especially in Tamil Nadu. Today in Parliament, DMK MPs raised the urgent issue of Karnataka’s failure to release the mandated 7,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. In the Rajya Sabha, we moved a Rule 267 notice seeking an immediate discussion on this critical matter, but permission was not granted. In protest, we staged a walkout, with our colleagues in the Lok Sabha also joining in solidarity. We urged the Union Government to take immediate steps to ensure the release of Cauvery water, halt the Mekedatu Project, and constitute a Tribunal to safeguard the rights of Tamil Nadu as the lower riparian State, while protecting the interests of farmers and the drinking water needs of its people.
