We are supposed to be the next generation of explorers, risktakers, adrenaline junkies. Addicts to the feeling of being so damn unemployable your only option is owner. The inability to sleep because of visions so big they pull you from bed in the dead of the night. Dreams so futuristic people laugh when you tell them. Those are the builders I admire. It’s f*cking hard. But we do the work.

As you probably know, there are currently not enough F-16 pilots to fly the aircraft provided to Ukraine by our Allies. Training of pilots and crew takes a long time. During their visit to Kyiv this week, US Senators Richard Blumenthal and Lindsey Graham shared that Ukraine is looking for retired NATO F-16 pilots: "Additionally, President Zelensky told us both that he would be looking to supplement his Air Force by establishing a program to enlist retired NATO F-16 fighter pilots. We support this effort. Ukraine is already fielding units of freedom fighters on the ground, and this volunteer force should be replicated in the air," Senator Blumenthal posted on his website. "My message is this: we need to be fully engaged," Senator Graham added. "Here’s what I want to see in 2024: I’m going to bring this up. I’m asking [U.S.] President [Joe] Biden, before you leave office, to make sure this offer is extended," he said. F-16 pilots, including Dan Hampton, have said previously they would be willing to do that. This would significantly increase Ukrainian capabilities and enhance our air defense potential. When you see a tanker show up at the base, and you know there’s an important delivery from Lockheed Martin coming up based on the news… For the last few days we’ve had the tabletop scanner sitting in our bedroom waiting for the call. Yesterday morning we finally heard what we’d been hoping for. RUMMY01 (KC-46) and RETRO61 flight of 3, the Polish F-35s, requesting clearance. We raced to our spot, and thankfully the overcast skies meant location on the field didn’t matter too much. Right as the F-35s departed, just before 8am local time, a light rain started moving in. I still need to edit the photos, but for now here are the takeoff videos. This will probably be the last time I get to see them for a while. Hopefully one day I’ll make it over to Poland for another air show.
