Apple Maps 3d is insanely impressive now (see video below) Google on the other hand decided to build an insanely clunky solution to display 3d maps to avoid using mobile GPUs: A Google server streams (!) a live video of its 3d rendered map to you, the result is a disastrous: a super laggy and clunky 3d view full of video compression artefacts with a response time of 2-3 seconds for every movement And I know WHY they built that, someone felt it was not inclusive to only have 3d maps that are high performing on iOS because Apple's GPUs are insanely fast and can deal with it (as you can see below in Apple Maps) but they wanted to support inferior phones, I get it But then they also decided to worsen the experience for iOS users who could easily run 3d natively on its GPU It's just an insane product decision, there's no way to cut it: they could have super smooth 3d like Apple Maps but neutered it with a clunky live stream Even more insane because Google does have native 3d on iOS in a completely different app that nobody uses: Google Earth Is 3d important? Not rly for nav no but it shows again something about Google's engineering decisions, like the redesign of the Google OAuth Login screen that made zero sense Nobody is speaking up against bad ideas in Google meetings, everyone's too scared of HR maybe, it's the opposite of a meritocracy and it's just super visible from using Google products right now

This is my favorite Black Skimmer video because it perfectly illustrates the beauty of flight and this bird’s mastery of it and its environment. Watch how it makes a full 180-degree turn using its tail while keeping its head perfectly stable and its eye on the prize. It’s hard for me to fathom the amount of thinking that even goes into this process, and yet the Black Skimmer does it all on autopilot. What an amazing animal.

Claude Fable 5 has impressive spatial reasoning capabilities that are immediately relevant for engineering and design: In this example I gave Claude Fable 5 a single photo of a hierarchical mesh torus (image generated using a text-to-image model); and in one shot, no iteration, it built a full interactive 3D simulation: ~1,400 nodes & 4,400 fibers, realistic mass–spring physics you can grab, compress, twist… plus strain-based sonification so you can 'hear' the structure vibrate. Claude Fable is crazy. It feels like a senior full-stack engineer trying way too hard to impress me. I just gave it a screenshot of a 3D model, and it: - downloaded headless Blender - find the original .glb file on my desktop - retopologized the model from 970K faces to 20K - rigged it - added animations: walking, drinking, jumping, chilling All in one shot. Normally this would take at least 4 different tools and a whole team for days. I’ve never been so pleased. Thank you, Claude Anthropic The best toy for people who are just creative enough to randomly build insane shit but chaotic enough to never plan it properly.

It did the first cut of our Fable 5.1 vibe check video...kind of mindblowing - Impressive 3D games and visualizations. It can make beautiful 3D worlds from a single prompt. I one-shotted a historically accurate rendition of the Battle of Waterloo - It can overcomplicate things. (Especially at higher effort levels.) Ask for a simple interface and you get extra labels, buttons, and features everywhere. It has a habit of turning everything into a landing page. It just doesnt quite match Fable's ability to intuitively understand your prompt and do something delightful (without overcomplicating.) Net Result: If you already live in ChatGPT for Work or Codex and can afford it, it’s an easy upgrade from 5.6-Sol. The biggest proof of Astra's effectiveness at helping you do work is our vibe check. We found out it was launching at 3 AM this morning, and had a 4,000 word vibe check + video done by 2 PM. Not possible without this model. I’m reaching for Astra all day, but Fable 5.1 still gets my biggest tasks. On ambitious builds, Fable is better at understanding what I want and taking it further than I would have thought to ask. State of Play: Astra is launching to Enterprise customers today, and the rest of ChatGPT users over the coming days. Now, both OpenAI and Anthropic have a higher class of models that cost more to use. That changes who gets to use frontier AI and how.
