Fallout (1997), developed by Tim Cain's team at Interplay's Black Isle Studios, is an isometric, turn-based RPG in a retro-futuristic post-apocalyptic world after the 2077 Great War. Forbidden Forest might look terribly dated now, but if you didn’t grow up with early 80s gaming standards, you'd never realise just how far ahead of its time it really was. Parallax scrolling that created real depth as trees and background layers moved at different speeds. A dynamic day-to-night cycle with a detailed moon and darkening sky. One of the earliest uses of animated blood/gore (woohoo, scary!) when enemies were hit. Context-sensitive music and eerie sound effects (including a pretty terrifying scream when certain creatures died). It was programmed by one person (Paul Norman), sold over a million copies and helped push what the C64 (and home computers) could do. Let that sink in for a second: 1 million copies in 1983! By the way, Norman's second game was Aztec Challenge, another 80s masterpiece. If you listen to the sound of the javelin throw in the opening level of Aztec Challenge and compare it to the arrow shot in Forbidden Forest you might notice a similarity... In 1983, when most games were simple arcade clones with flat graphics and basic beeps, Forbidden Forest looked like a movie horror experience on a home computer. Final Fantasy (Square, 1987) is by no means a complex RPG but when I first played it, I was instantly hooked. It had such a wonderful spirit/charm, that's hard to describe properly. I recently played it again and despite its age it was still a blast. Final Fantasy ultimately launched the iconic RPG series created by Hironobu Sakaguchi as Square's potential last game amid financial woes, then became a massive hit, selling over 500,000 copies in Japan. Players assemble a party of four customizable Warriors of Light from six classes (Fighter, Thief, Black Belt, White/Black/Red Mage). They quest across a darkening world to restore four elemental crystals stolen by Fiends: Lich, Kary (Marilith), Kraken, Tiamat - defeating Garland and Chaos in turn-based battles amid grinding, exploration, and Nobuo Uematsu's legendary score. The latest part in the series "Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles" has been released a few months ago, meaning that it is now one of the longest running RPGs of all time. What started as a last ditch effort to save a company almost literally turned into gold.

In an interview, Richard Garriott stated that Ultima VII: The Black Gate was "the most masterfully executed of the Ultima series". He has also stated that the game was, along with Ultima IV, his own favorite overall. It was one of the most complex and longest roleplaying games I ever played. The world is truly massive, and only if you're into deep lore and long texts/stories (and being a rather patient player), this epic classic is for you. I sometimes wonder how terrible such a game would do today, with players' attention spans maxing out after a few minutes at best. Maybe that's exactly the reason why they don't exist anymore? Back in 1992, The Black Gate was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, being widely regarded as the high point in the series. Ultima VII is the first game in the series that runs entirely in real-time, and only pauses when the inventory, the menu, or a dialogue is open, significantly affecting combat. This was one of the bigger changes from the predecessors and something that a turn-based RPG fan had to get used to. It certainly took me some time. I'll take an educated guess and say that if you were a fan of RPGs back in the day, you played this wonderful masterpiece.

40 years ago today, Ace of Aces was released. It's probably a bit too old for some of the people who follow my account but it was certainly way ahead of its time back in 1986. Superb graphics, excellent sound effects and a story/gameplay that felt highly immersive - those are the things that I remember when first playing this as a kid. Not an easy game by any means but it got you hooked fast. I am not enough of a history buff to know whether the missions were somewhat realistic but I would like to believe so. The mission briefings and the "interactive" map during the game added to that feeling of authenticity. We used to turn up the volume for this one, especially for the intro and cutscene when the mission starts and the black and white picture slide show started, with the overlapping sound effects at the 0:30 mark - it still fascinates me to this day. That cutscene uses a total of six colours and it still looks absolutely incredible.

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines (1998) was a brilliant game by Pyro Studios, set in World War II. You command elite Allied soldiers, like a Green Beret, a sniper, or a spy on stealth missions behind Nazi lines. The game allows you to use unique skills for sabotage, assassinations, and escapes while you have to keep in mind the line of sight of enemy forces and patrols. It sold over 1 million copies and had several sequels. According to Wiki this is also the most successful game series ever made by a Spanish team. It is rather slow paced (which I like), highly tactical and also featuring extremely beautiful graphics with an incredible love and attention to detail. And while most non-German games that include digitized German speech sound like Monty Python, this one had very realistic sound-bits. Commandoes was one of the games we played in our late 90s LAN sessions, and - unlike a real commando - there were a lot of loud debates on the next (correct) move, some friendly banter, and the occassional "oh shit" moments.

Westwood was such an amazing game studio. One of their timeless classics is Eye of the Beholder 2, which was released in 1991. The intro alone gave me nerd chills - anyone who ever played Dungeons & Dragons would remember Khelben Blackstaff, and if he considers you his friend, what an honour! The game itself is your typical dungeon crawler. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way but appreciating it for what it was and is, a great game of its genre. Excellent graphics (I am such a sucker for that 90s pixel style), good sound effects and music, and an easy to use interface, making the real-time fights fast paced but manageable. Among the greats of Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, Ultima, and Wizardry, the likes of Eye of the Beholder or Lands of Lore were probably a tier below, but I always loved coming back to them. To me, this game is emblematic of the early 90s, and for that I love it.

Populous, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper, Powermonger... but most importantly Syndicate (1993) left a huge mark in the 90s as an isometric real-time tactical and strategic game. It is set in a dystopian future in which corporations have replaced governments and puts the player in control of a corporation fighting for global dominance. You go on countless missions all over the world, eliminate targets, blow up stuff, research weapons and equipment, and upgrade your team of cybernetically modified agents attempting to take control of a particular country. The graphics blew me away at the time, the music and sound effects were spot on, the vibe was very dark/dystopian, and it felt like a very fresh new concept when it was published. I don't think anyone who played games in the 90s would not know Syndicate.

If you had a dot-matrix printer in the 80s, chances are you used this incredible publishing program. It allowed users to easily create signs, greeting cards, banners, posters, and letterheads using its built-in clip art, fonts, and templates. And if you were the curious type, I’m sure you printed an entire page in black just to see what would happen. In case you never did, let me tell you: it was both a nerve-wracking sound and a totally drenched, soggy piece of paper in the end. (Totally worth it!) Originally launched for the Apple II and later ported to the Commodore 64, IBM PC, and other platforms, it worked with any common dot-matrix printer. Its simple interface meant even 9-year-old me could figure it out. I made covers for virtually anything, from my father's toolbox to my mother's kitchen drawers. It sold over a million copies, and became one of the most popular titles of the era.

KIDS: When you lose the puck, how hard are you willing to work to get it back? As a coach, I want you to make plays. I want you to be creative. I want you to play with no fear of making mistakes. The only stipulation I have is that when you try to make a play and you turn it over, you have to work like hell to get it back. Here's a great example from a team that MAKES A LOT OF PLAYS. Tampa turns it over in the Ozone and then watch the effort from the players to get it back. Hounds. They create another turnover and then get rewarded in transition. Coaches, amazing clip to show your teams!!

If you had a Nintendo 64, you played this epic classic. Super Mario 64 turns 30 this year. It was the first Mario game in a 3D world, and remains the most successful game ever for the Nintendo 64 with over 11 million (!) copies sold. Being a huge Super Mario fan from the NES era, seeing Mario come to live in a 3D world was incredible. Once again, the goal is to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, a battle for the ages. To this day, it's my favorite Mario game. Did you play (and finish) it back then?

It is widely regarded as a textbook example of a game that was too ambitious for its time, resources, and team size. Still critically acclaimed and a cult favourite, it underperformed commercially relative to the massive hype surrounding it (and Molyneux’s name). The game combined god-game mechanics (influencing villagers and facing moral choices between good and evil), a learning AI creature, gesture-based controls, hand-of-god interaction, and a massive open world. This was groundbreaking in 2001, but it also pushed hardware limits too far for the average user. I’m not surprised it came from Lionhead Studios. The godfather of real-time dungeon crawlers? There can only be one: Dungeon Master Developed by FTL Games and published in 1987, it was a groundbreaking real-time RPG that revolutionized the genre. It featured 3D graphics, and innovative mechanics like skill improvement through use and repetition (no traditional levels). I have lost count by now how many times I have played this. It simply doesn't get old. You assemble a party of four heroes to descend into a multi-level dungeon, solving puzzles, fighting monsters in real-time, and retrieving the Firestaff to defeat Lord Chaos. Its atmospheric sound, immersive vibe, and tense real-time gameplay influenced other titles like Eye of the Beholder, Lands of Lore or Black Crypt. It featured 3D graphics, and innovative mechanics like skill improvement through use and repetition (no traditional levels). I have lost count by now how many times I have played this. It simply doesn't get old. You assemble a party of four heroes to descend into a multi-level dungeon, solving puzzles, fighting monsters in real-time, and retrieving the Firestaff to defeat Lord Chaos. Its atmospheric sound, immersive vibe, and tense real-time gameplay influenced other titles like Eye of the Beholder, Lands of Lore or Black Crypt. The sound of a fallen dictatorship. I heard this sound firsthand 35 years ago in Romania. Since then, my country has progressed a lot from a shithole to an average EU country. Before Half-Life... there was Fade to Black (1995), a truly brilliant action-adventure game developed by Delphine Software as a sequel to Flashback. It follows hero Conrad Hart, awakened from cryogenic sleep in an alien prison on the Moon. You have to explore, fight, solve puzzles, and navigate a sci-fi conspiracy in a fully 3D polygonal world. Back in the day, it felt revolutionary with smooth 3D graphics, dynamic camera angles, and a perfect blend of shooting, platforming, and adventure way before Tomb Raider took the crown. Story, atmosphere, pace, graphics, sound effects - it was the whole package. In 1995, this was a real masterclass.

It's not often that you see a game crossing over from one genre into another. Ultima went from classic turn-based RPG to real-time first-person 3D view action/adventure RPG. And it worked! Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth of Worlds was developed by Looking Glass Technologies and published by Origin Systems in 1993. Gameplay is non-linear, letting you roam freely through huge, multi-level environments, solve puzzles, fight in real time, and interact with NPCs. For its time, it was highly innovative. It featured a fully explorable 3D world (no grid-snapping like older dungeon crawlers). The physics and object interactions were next level: you could pick up, drop, throw, stack, or combine almost anything. Want to build a staircase out of crates? Go for it. Pile junk to reach a high ledge? Sure thing. Knock over a table during a fight? It all worked. This level of interactivity was unheard of in 1993 - at least nothing close comes to mind. As an old-time Ultima fan, I was skeptical when I heard about an action RPG spin-off that diverged so much from the original concept. But boy, was I wrong; it was a blast!
