Has anyone here played Final Fantasy XVI, the latest numbered title that came out three years ago? Personally, I had a really great time with it, but it was definitely one of the more divisive games among Final Fantasy fans. What I loved most was the story and presentation. It felt like the kind of visual spectacle I had always imagined while playing Final Fantasy games over the years. The summon battles were absolutely breathtaking and felt truly cinematic. That said, because it wasn’t a traditional turn-based RPG and didn’t even have a real party system, a lot of people criticized it as “basically Devil May Cry with a Final Fantasy skin.” Honestly though, after Final Fantasy XV disappointed many fans by feeling overly stretched out and unfinished, Naoki Yoshida — the producer who famously turned Final Fantasy XIV into a huge success — was brought in to create a polished and complete experience as efficiently as possible. In that regard, I think the project was a success. I’m already looking forward to Final Fantasy XVII, whenever that finally happens. But realistically, it probably won’t come until after the third part of the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth remake project is released.

In an interview, Richard Garriott stated that Ultima VII: The Black Gate was "the most masterfully executed of the Ultima series". He has also stated that the game was, along with Ultima IV, his own favorite overall. It was one of the most complex and longest roleplaying games I ever played. The world is truly massive, and only if you're into deep lore and long texts/stories (and being a rather patient player), this epic classic is for you. I sometimes wonder how terrible such a game would do today, with players' attention spans maxing out after a few minutes at best. Maybe that's exactly the reason why they don't exist anymore? Back in 1992, The Black Gate was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, being widely regarded as the high point in the series. Ultima VII is the first game in the series that runs entirely in real-time, and only pauses when the inventory, the menu, or a dialogue is open, significantly affecting combat. This was one of the bigger changes from the predecessors and something that a turn-based RPG fan had to get used to. It certainly took me some time. I'll take an educated guess and say that if you were a fan of RPGs back in the day, you played this wonderful masterpiece.

Drakkhen (1989) by Infogrames. This game broke my brain back in the day. I wanted to play it so badly! It looked incredibly awesome and intriguing - yet I had no clue how to properly play it. Way ahead of its time, an absolute gem. Drakkhen stood out as one of the first RPGs with true 3D/open-world exploration, and it was also an early example of real-time tactics in RPGs. It had a wonderfully eerie soundtrack, some bizarre enemies, a cryptic story, and a strong sense of exploration. It felt more dreamlike/surreal rather than standard fantasy. On the flip side, it was notoriously difficult and unforgiving - definitely not easy to learn or master. I think in hindsight I was simply too young. Revisiting it at a later stage was a much better experience.

This might not be a story anyone really wants to hear, but I’ll talk a little about myself. I’ve been a fan of Final Fantasy since I was a kid. Back in 2000, when I joined an online gaming community, I tried to use the nickname “Final Fantasy,” but someone was already using it. So I decided to go with something a little different and started using the nickname “Last Fantasy.” After using that nickname for more than 10 years, people probably felt it was too long, so many of them started calling me “LAFAN” for short. I ended up liking it too, so when I started using social media, I began using the shortened nickname instead. Its brilliant style features a distinct dystopian look and feel, incredible music and sound effects, and an immersive story. The intro alone is a masterpiece. I played World of Warcraft for many, many years (stopped around early Cata days). The one thing that stood out to me more than anything was its massive size. It was literally a world. And it felt huge because you had to explore everything by foot (to start with anyway). This might be a hot take but I always felt that some of the magic got lost with the flying mounts and teleports later on. The upgrade from walking to getting your first mount was nice (it felt like a real milestone) but the flying mount and teleports turned a once massive world into a set of waypoints. I know it's all under the umbrella of convenience but I felt that the world really started to shrink and lost a big chunk of its charm. It wasn't about exploring anymore, it was about getting to the next dungeon or raid as fast as possible, relegating everything else to secondary importance, including all the little details, NPCs, caves, coastlines, mountains, and everything that that was once so wonderful to explore.

This is where it all started. Caitlin Clark was the great white hope. A white girl….on a predominantly white team….dominating black players in Women’s basketball….was set to make HISTORY. What a crowning achievement. Millions of racists who had previously refused to even watch Women’s basketball due to the heavy presence of black women suddenly developed this newfound interest. Caitlin was going to do it. A white girl was going to sit all alone on the throne of Women’s basketball as the BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD, and a NATIONAL CHAMPION! Then it happened…..this BLACK girl from inner-city Baltimore ruined the party for EVERYone! 😂😂😂 Angel became the most hated villain that day, and Caitlin became a victim. She’s been a victim ever since. ———————————————— I hopped online following that game, and these racists were losing their collective MINDS!! Angel had RUINED their moment of anticipated white supremacy….which was ultimately all that they cared about. They never gave a crap about basketball. I won’t even repeat some of the terms that they used to describe Angel Reese, who was the MVP of the Final Four. They were hateful, vile, vulgar, racist, and even violent. Angel literally received death threats in her DM’s…….for ruining their racist moment. The revolution was televised. They still DESPISE Angel to this day…….because of THAT day! 😂😂

Starcraft (Blizzard, 1998) is probably the best example of a game that didn't just stand the test of time, it defeated it. To this day, it is still played on a high (competitive) level, has reached ultimate cult status, and is a legend among the greatest games ever made. Blizzard was such an incredible powerhouse in the 90s up until the mid to late 2000s. I played Starcraft for many years and was never very good at it, but I loved it nonetheless. It has such a high skill ceiling that you always feel you can do and get better. And what some of the best pros in esports show is reaching God-like skill level, truly remarkable. Just let this sink in for a second: The game is 27 (!) years old, and is still played on the highest level. If you can name a game that challenges Starcraft in that context, please, I am all ears. The series sold over 17 million copies of games and expansions by the end of 2015, making it the best selling PC strategy game of all time. By the end of 2017, the franchise had grossed over $1 billion in total revenue. Those of you who played it, probably all know Artosis and Tasteless, who made Starcraft a household name in the English speaking markets through their live commenting of tournaments around the world. As a huge fan of the Virtua Fighter series, I was eagerly waiting for Virtua Fighter 5 to hit the arcades. Unfortunately, Sega didn’t sell the arcade hardware and instead operated it through a rental system, so outside of Japan, the game was nearly impossible to find in arcades. Thankfully, with the huge leap in performance of the PS3 and Xbox 360, Virtua Fighter 5 received the first truly complete console port in the series. I remember having so much fun playing it back then. Sadly, in Korea, the Tekken series was so widely available in arcades that very few people even knew about Virtua Fighter 5. It’s a shame that such a great game slowly faded into obscurity. Eventually, the series seemed to lose its momentum, and I thought we would never see a new Virtua Fighter again. So you can imagine how happy I was when Sega announced that they were working on a new entry. Is there anyone out there who has been waiting for a new Virtua Fighter as long as I have?

It's not often that you see a game crossing over from one genre into another. Ultima went from classic turn-based RPG to real-time first-person 3D view action/adventure RPG. And it worked! Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth of Worlds was developed by Looking Glass Technologies and published by Origin Systems in 1993. Gameplay is non-linear, letting you roam freely through huge, multi-level environments, solve puzzles, fight in real time, and interact with NPCs. For its time, it was highly innovative. It featured a fully explorable 3D world (no grid-snapping like older dungeon crawlers). The physics and object interactions were next level: you could pick up, drop, throw, stack, or combine almost anything. Want to build a staircase out of crates? Go for it. Pile junk to reach a high ledge? Sure thing. Knock over a table during a fight? It all worked. This level of interactivity was unheard of in 1993 - at least nothing close comes to mind. As an old-time Ultima fan, I was skeptical when I heard about an action RPG spin-off that diverged so much from the original concept. But boy, was I wrong; it was a blast!

I'm playing GTA V on a PS3 and its been such a fun experience. I remember when was a kid and playing this for the first time, I didn't give a damn about how BAD the framerate was during driving. I was constantly in awe by how realistic this game looked back then that the framerate wasn't something that was going to stop me from enjoying it. Don't get me wrong, this game is running on a PS3 that has 256mb of RAM and 256mb of VRAM which is some black magic itself and the fact that Rockstar Games managed to have such a massive open world game with that much traffic and NPCs running in real-time is a feat on its own.

I was 10 when I first saw and played Karateka. "Little me" thought it was awesome. Did I mind the 4-color CGA graphics? Nope. And neither was I bothered by the rather dreadful PC speaker sound. What hooked me instantly was how fluid the animations looked, how the game was paced, and the story told. You truly felt being the hero. You also truly felt the kick in the nuts the very first time when running towards the princess. What's maybe difficult to see from today's perspective is how Karateka (1984 by Jordan Mechner) moved the goalposts so far that it’s difficult to put into words. Genre-defining would be the most fitting attribute. Up until that point a game of this caliber simply didn't exist. And if that wasn't enough to make it legendary, then consider that it was Mechner's first game. He was 20 when it was released, meaning he started working on it and programming it solo as a teenager. What a way to say "hello world!"
