Should Guizzu start buying horses for MNDF? This is religious fundamentalism mixed with a very literal reading of history. This is treating references in religious texts as instructions for modern life. Horses and caves made sense in the 7th century cause that was the reality of the time. Trying to turn those things into modern day ideals like learning horse riding for war and romanticising caves is just missing the context. Religion isn’t asking people to freeze time and act out the past. Also, horses aren’t necessarily an Islamic war thing. Every religion used horses cause that’s how pre modern societies traveled and fought. Bible, Hindu epics, Buddhist kingdoms, Vikings, all relied on horses. Treating historical tech as timeless religious duty is ahistorical literalism. US 🇺🇸 has the highest horse population and riding culture in the world, around 11 million horses and over 27 million riders yet no one argues that Americans are preparing for war on horseback. Modern warfare has absolutely nothing to do with horses.

🐴 A practical idea for America’s wild horses The BLM currently manages tens of thousands of excess wild horses in holding facilities. Long-term corrals are expensive and stressful for the animals. Meanwhile, many Native communities have strong cultural ties to horses and proven equine therapy programs that help with trauma, youth mental health, and cultural reconnection. What if we expanded partnerships between the BLM and interested tribes? Real precedent already exists: the Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary on the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho reservation successfully cares for BLM mustangs in a semi-wild setting while supporting education and adoption. This isn’t a total fix for wild horse management, but it could be a humane, win-win step: • Move suitable horses to tribal lands with proper veterinary support and capacity • Support tribal equine therapy and cultural programs • Reduce taxpayer costs for long-term holding • Respect tribal sovereignty and expertise Tribes already manage their own horse populations and have sovereignty tools that allow flexible, responsible approaches. With targeted funding, training support, and clear agreements on care standards, this could scale thoughtfully. We do not yet know this horse’s name, age, history, or what caused their death — but we do know this: no horse should spend their life pulling a carriage through the streets of Manhattan. The panicked actions of these horses just before today's main race can bust the racing industry's myths better than we can: "They're just a bit excited." No. They're anxious and don't want to race. "They love to race." No. They love to run. Those are two different things. And in this case, many are running out of fear. Horses run naturally from fear of being left behind by the pack and attacked as prey. "They're trained for this." Really? Then why do they need to be controlled by excruciating metal mouth bits? These “equine athletes” did not get a choice in this matter, they never signed up for this or were informed of the risks. If instances like these, the bravery of Running Lion yesterday and White Birch today aren’t examples of individuals showing that they don’t want to do this, then what is? When will we listen to the horses when they tell us "NO"? We were not the only ones protesting today. These animals will continue to resist, and for as long as they do, we will stand up for all life. I completed 34 spays and neuters today—before noon. I’m posting every spay and neuter I perform until Texas A&M University stops killing animals for student training. Every veterinary student should graduate having performed at least 50 spays and neuters. Instead, some students are still being trained through terminal labs—killing healthy animals to practice a handful of procedures. Through public records requests, we reviewed Texas A&M protocols that request permission to kill: • 240 dogs • 43 goats • 48 birds Additional protocols include: • Up to 10 horses per year killed for equine surgery training • Turtles pithed—a procedure involving destruction of the brain—for physiology demonstrations that teach no clinical skills and have readily available non-lethal alternatives These animals are not suffering from conditions requiring euthanasia. High-volume spay/neuter, shelter partnerships, and modern teaching tools exist. I did not perform these labs in veterinary school—and I am not a less capable veterinarian because of it. These animals are not suffering from conditions necessitating medical euthanasia. · Equine euthanasia for cadaver surgery training: In this protocol, up to 10 horses are killed each year to train veterinary residents. While some horses are donated for euthanasia due to chronic, irreversible illnesses, some are also sourced from internal protocols. · Properties of cardiac muscle (teaching laboratory exercise for VTPP 423 & VTPP 910): Two turtles a year are chemically pithed and used in live demonstrations to demonstrate “electrical and mechanical events of the turtle heart” to veterinary students (additional turtles are also killed to perform this demonstration to undergraduates). Turtles are purchased from a vendor. This demonstration lacks educational merit as it does not teach any clinical skills, nor is there any justifiable reason to perform this demonstration when there are many other ways to teach the principles illustrated using teaching methods that do not involve the killing of healthy animals. · VMID 935-301, Surgery 1: In this protocol, 162 goats and/or sheep are purchased and then used in terminal teaching exercises to teach veterinary students surgical techniques. The instructors justify the protocol by stating that hemostasis techniques cannot be learned in simulators, models, or cadavers, although research has shown that these are effective methods of teaching hemostasis. This is also not a justification for doing terminal surgeries – most other schools successfully teach students castration and ovariohysterectomy as survival surgeries on shelter animals without requiring terminal surgeries as practice. · Reptile and Amphibian Teaching Labs: This protocol is for teaching vet students handling, and procedures on frogs and/or toads. Up to 20 animals are killed per year at the end of the lab. The animals are acquired through vendors, pet stores, or internal protocols. Some may be adopted instead of euthanized, but it is unclear how many survive. The animals used are otherwise healthy. · ACVIM Large Animal Internal Medicine Bootcamp (every two years): This protocol requires up to two horses to be killed and their cadavers used for teaching residents advanced medical procedures. This event appears to take place every two years, although it is unclear if it is still ongoing. The horses are sourced from the university herd and do not appear to be slated for medical euthanasia. Several protocols use mostly donated animals, and we encourage you to expand your donation program, particularly for cadavers. · Animal use for teaching through the Educational Memorial Program: Donated animals are used to create cadavers that are then used in teaching veterinary students, graduate and undergraduate students. The number and species of cadavers depends on availability. · Student Chapter of AAEP: In this protocol, 8 horse cadavers were used for teaching veterinary students from around the country. Procedures taught include laparoscopy, abdominal explore, laceration repair, necropsy, and emergency/critical care. It is unclear if this protocol recurs or if it was a one-time event. Most of the horses were donated for medical reasons, but some were sourced from the university herds, and it is unclear if they were slated for medical euthanasia. · Student Chapters of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, Small Ruminant Practitioners, and Swine Practitioners skills teaching wetlab: Four terminally ill calves were donated for this lab teaching vet students euthanasia and necropsy skills. Out of the Frying Pan, into the Fire A hapless pigeon looking for shelter from the rain meets a farm cat named Banana. Farm cats are used specifically for pest control, so while the following does apply to them, the concentration of domestic cats in cities is a much more destructive issue. It is estimated that domestic cats kill 1.3 billion prey animals every year, which is a modest estimate and a major problem for the natural balance of the ecosystem. Domestic cats are not native to North America (they are native to modern day Iraq Cyprus, and Syria) and are one of, if not the most damaging of any predatory invasive species on the continent. Most will have the benefit of an owner and protected shelter, so they are able to temporarily remove themselves from the food chain while they sleep - which is a huge advantage over everything else in that system. They are also most likely fed at home, so when they attack something it's usually out of instinct and not hunger - which helps along their "kill for fun" reputation.

This guy is riding on a horse from Madinah to Badr tracing the Prophet and ~300 of his companion’s steps who did this same journey during this blessed month of Ramadan to engage in the greatest battle in Islam’s history. What makes that journey even more special is the Muslims only had TWO horses. Most had to walk in that heat. On that terrain. Only For Allah’s sake. Only to spread His word. It’s their sacrifice as to why we are able to live life as Muslims. Never forget that. And NEVER venerate or label as martyrs those who denigrate and Takfir them.

This is a Bill about animal welfare, transparency in meat production and consumer choice. It does not seek to ban halal or kosher meat. It seeks to ensure that it is clearly labelled. It is important that consumers have such information so that they can make an informed choice about what they are buying. Currently consumers do not have that information, and many are purchasing and consuming halal and kosher meat without their knowledge and agreement. The unique process of halal and kosher meat requires the animal to have its throat slit. In the case of halal meat, the animal is often stunned before it is killed — although it might not be — and for the shechita killing for kosher meat, there is no pre‑stunning. This lack of stunning causes the animal to experience severe pain. An individual concerned about animal welfare would want to know if the animal has been stunned prior to slaughter. Likewise, there are many religious groups who want to know what they are consuming too and whether the meat has been blessed by another religion. In all those cases clear labelling is essential to make an informed choice. Currently, the legislation that regulates animal slaughter is set out in assimilated EU regulation 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing, as well as in the Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing (England) Regulations 2015. Under these laws, animals must be stunned before they are killed, but exemptions exist for killing without stunning in accordance with specific religious rites. Added to that, there are currently no requirements for such meat to be labelled. What was once an exemption to the accepted stunning process of animals has become a growing part of the UK’s meat market. The Government’s own figures show that of the 1.035 billion animals processed in English and Welsh slaughterhouses in 2024, an estimated 214.6 million were slaughtered to produce halal meat. The analysis shows that the proportion of meat supplied by non‑stun slaughter is about four times greater than the proportion of Muslims and Jews in the UK. Although Government guidance is clear that meat that results from non‑stun slaughter “must be intended for consumption by Jews or Muslims”, production is clearly going way beyond that, so much so that the UK now exports halal meat. Between 2018 and 2019, there was an almost 700 % increase in the volume of sheep meat exported to the United Arab Emirates, all of which is required to be halal. Clearly, without compulsory labelling of non‑stunned meat, slaughterhouses have gone down the route of producing more of it. In effect, a two‑tier system has been created, whereby some slaughterhouses comply with stunning laws and others do not, citing the religious exemption, though without ever intending to focus their sale on that market. Unfortunately, a driver of the market for non‑stunned meat is the fact that a step of the process is removed, meaning that production of non‑stunned meat is cheaper. Supermarkets and food outlets can purchase that cheaper meat without ever declaring it to the customer, which is not what was intended by the legislation. We have seen many examples of this over the last 15 years; Britain’s biggest retailers — such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Asda — have sold halal or kosher meat without informing the consumer, as have Domino’s, Pizza Hut and KFC. Non‑stunned produce is being used by 17 local councils in schools, the majority of which are not Islamic faith schools, without parents or children having the first idea about it. It is also being served in hospitals and local councils. In December, Labour put forward its much‑vaunted animal welfare strategy, a document lauded for its aim of “preventing animals suffering unnecessarily”, which included the banning of boiling live lobsters, banning the use of carbon dioxide to stun pigs, and steps to ensure the more humane slaughter of farmed fish. I was surprised and alarmed to see no mention of the more humane slaughter of animals and the labelling of halal and kosher meat. There was a clear opportunity to call for the labelling of halal and kosher meat, but it was missed. Nowhere in Labour’s 12,500‑word animal welfare strategy was it mentioned. We often hear in the House that the UK holds the status of a world leader in animal welfare, but such a glaring gap shows that this country can no longer make such a claim. Food and You 2, which is a biannual official statistic survey commissioned by the Food Standards Agency, found that the most common spontaneously expressed food concern in 2024 was “food production method”. In August 2022, almost 99 % of respondents to the Government’s call for evidence on labelling for animal welfare said that method‑of‑slaughter labelling should be introduced. In research from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, 92 % of halal consumers state that clear halal certification is important, so is it not time we updated our regulations and demanded that our meat was clearly and fully labelled, so that we know what we are buying and eating?
