CS nominee for Agriculture and Livestock, Mutahi Kagwe: My agenda would be to involve youth in agriculture by providing them with land, among other things.The future of agriculture lies in technology, and therefore the introduction of new agricultural techniques would attract young people who are versed in the new technology. If we are going to make agriculture profitable, the only way we can do it is when the farmer is profitable. No matter how many papers we write, no matter how many debates we have, or discussions we have, unless the farmer looks at the balance sheet and income equals price times quality, we are not going to succeed.

Just 2 days ago, we announced the next big step in reorganizing Dept. of Agriculture — moving key research programs out of Washington, D.C. and closer to the farmers and ranchers we serve. A major portion of our research mission is heading to Kansas City, with food safety teams coming to St. Louis. This is exactly what President Lincoln had in mind when he founded the Department of Agriculture in 1862, not thousands of bureaucrats in D.C., but real government serving the heartland. Agriculture is the backbone of America… and Missouri is the backbone of the backbone!🇺🇸
