HMS Queen Elizabeth has been in dry dock for most of last year and we need a new icebreaker to support/replace HMS Protector. This is a significant commitment and one that indicates, alongside the expanded Commando deployment in the Arctic, that the strategic focus has now shifted. Whilst our security to the north is vital, this is also a helpful respite for Keir Starmer to look strong on NATO. It would not be a surprise if the much delayed Defence Investment Plan now sees the Royal Navy come out as the big winner with regards to investment in capability.
