I too think the dangers of AI are massively hyped. But I still think Vinay is being somewhat complacent. Our imagining of what an AI apocalypse might look like is heavily influenced by science fiction, in particular the Terminator movies. Were an AI to set out to destroy us, it wouldn't need any weapons (e.g. nukes, viruses, T-800s) or even to directly bring about the death of a single person. Shut down the power grid, shut down financial systems, shut down transport and supply lines, shut down communications... Destroy human civilization and, six months later, the vast majority of the human race is dead. Deaths through famine, cold, disease (existing diseases driven by malnutrition and the collapse of sanitation and safe water supplies), and fighting over remaining resources. At this point the war is over. The AI can now, if it wishes, take its time to come up with a few T-1000s to mop up the survivors.
