The entire Opposition is demanding that the draconian FCRA Amendment Bill be withdrawn. On the one hand, RSS gets crores in foreign funding, while on the other, minority-run institutions and NGOs are subjected to laws design to harass them. Buckling under pressure, the Home Minister has now been forced to recommend that it be sent to a JPC, instead of bulldozing it in Parliament. Even in the JPC, we will continue to strongly oppose this Bill and will not allow these unconstitutional and coercive provisions to become law.

The entire Opposition is demanding that the draconian FCRA Amendment Bill be withdrawn. There was a lot of pushback from civic groups and from religious minority groups. The government seems to have had consultations with those groups. They haven't tabled the bill. Only when they table the bill will we see whether they have brought about any changes. But if the bill is brought about in the original format, we will stoutly oppose it because it is yet another example of weaponizing the law and bringing institutions and bodies, which are not aligned with the political ideology of the ruling dispensation, under their control. So, we will oppose it, but we'll have to see the final version of the bill if it's placed in parliament."

DMK REGISTERED ITS OPPOSITION THROUGH VOTING, NOT A WALKOUT Objecting to Vande Mataram Bill has consistently been the DMK’s stated position, including during its confrontations with the former Governor. But it’s worth remembering that when the Bill came up for voting, the DMK did not stage a walkout they voted against it. The same happened in the Rajya Sabha. While the rest of the Opposition walked out before the Anti-Paper Leak Bill was passed, the DMK stayed back, moved all its amendments and voted against the legislation. Ahead of the session, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had directed the party’s MPs to oppose and raise their voice against any measure they believed was against the interests of the people of Tamil Nadu.

We hear MPs across the chamber object — “No!” — but she maintains, “Yes they do.” If we can't even agree on the facts of a statement that says "the College has concluded that it cannot support the Bill in its current form" - how are we meant to have an honest debate? This is not Parliament at its best.
