But the Sylvestre decision has changed the legal landscape and created a serious risk that an immediate up-or-down vote could be challenged before Albertans ever get a final say. The goal has not changed. Alberta still needs a clear vote on a clear question. What has changed is the route to get there. A two-step process may now be the most realistic way to protect the vote, build support, and give the independence movement time to organize properly. The fight is not over. It is becoming more serious.

New petition pushes to keep the province in Canada Former PC deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk leads a counter-petition to block Alberta sovereignty, racing to collect nearly 300,000 signatures by October 28.
