UPS AND FEDEX GROUND MD-11 FLEETS UPS has temporarily grounded all 26 of its McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighters following the deadly Nov. 6 crash in Louisville, Kentucky. FedEx has also temporarily grounded its 28 MD-11 freighters. Video taken on October 11th, 2022, showing a few UPS MD-11s arriving at DFW on Airline Videos Live.

WESTERN GLOBAL FURLOUGHS ALL MD-11 PILOTS AFTER NATIONWIDE GROUNDING Western Global Airlines has furloughed its entire MD-11 pilot group after the FAA ordered a nationwide grounding of the type following the UPS 2976 crash. The airline, which operates 15 MD-11 freighters with an average age of 30 years, had hoped for approval of a “non-invasive” inspection program by Nov. 14. Instead, the FAA mandated “highly invasive” inspections, repairs, and parts replacements, extending the grounding indefinitely. With its operations almost entirely dependent on the MD-11, WGA says the situation is “untenable” and threatens the company’s survival. In an internal memo, pilots were informed that furloughs would take effect on Nov. 22—the first in the airline’s 12-year history. Western Global is currently operating three B747s to support its entire operations. Meanwhile, UPS and FedEx are scrambling to restructure their networks to offset the temporary loss of MD-11 capacity.
