Aguillar from Equatorial Guinea is celebrating the Lantern Festival with her best friend. They’ve come to Jinfang, a time-honored Chinese brand, to make Yuanxiao by shaking them in a basket. “Shake, shake, shake until the Yuanxiao are round and full!” It turns out that Tangyuan in southern China are wrapped by hand, while Yuanxiao in northern China are rolled and shaken into shape in a basket of glutinous rice flour. While in Xihaigu, one of the poorest regions in China, I had the opportunity to attend an eighth-grade English class. I've always been curious about how Chinese rural children see the world and how much they know about it. Language is essential for understanding a country and its culture. Most Chinese students are familiar with Alphonse Daudet's "La Dernière Classe", in which a French teacher teaches his students the final French lesson before the Germans occupy the region and French is banned. In contrast to Daudet's story, Chinese youngsters in villages are now taught other languages to understand the world better and learn from different cultures. Yuanhe Middle School, which I visited, is located in Xiji County. The World Food Programme listed the region as one of the "most unfit places for human settlement" in the 1970s. On November 16, 2020, Xiji became the last county in Xihaigu to be removed from the poverty list; this was a tremendous victory for the region and the country. Most students at Yuanhe Middle School are "left behind" kids whose parents work in cities to make a better life. Taking care of rural children is critical to China's poverty alleviation efforts. The school provides boarding services and free breakfast and lunch to students, who can also video chat with their parents daily. The school provides outdoor hiking, technology and art electives, and foreign language programs to help local youngsters understand the outside world. This is a story of how better education changes the lives of rural Chinese children.

This is utterly ridiculous. The Watertown school district in Wisconsin just banned students from playing a song with no lyrics whatsoever. "A Mother of a Revolution" was banned because it was an old song written to honor the life of a transgender activist. Listen to the pathetic excuses these Republicans give for banning students from playing the song. "This is a perfect example of what everyone sitting at this table ran on, which was ending indoctrination in the classrooms and ending radical curriculum. The board said it violates their controversial issues policy by quote, indoctrinating kids and endorsing violence." Republicans don't care about free speech.

On May 23rd, the Shantou Pavilion at the 20th International Cultural Industries Fair (#ICIF) dazzled visitors with a cyberpunk-style #YinggeDance performance. These robots, mimicking the characters from the classic Chinese novel "Water Margin", flawlessly matched the rhythm of the Yingge dance. The performance attracted many visitors to take out their phones and snap photos. #GDToday reporters were told by an official on-site that using robots to perform the Yingge dance not only integrates technology with traditional culture, but also allows primary and secondary school students to learn programming while simultaneously gaining an understanding of the traditional Chinese culture embedded in the Yingge dance.

I taught my Primary 2 students magnetic fields, and how they help us determine magnetic north and bearings using a compass. At the later half of the class, the students did a small experiment that used a magnet and compass to test what we learned. This is what Nigeria can take away from this: 1. LANGUAGE: Using Chinese to explain magnetic fields was so easy for them to understand, and took less than 4 mins. They never have to worry about understanding the grammar or remembering new vocabulary if another language was used. Language skill is not for everyone, just like technical and creative skills. While you or your son can learn a new language fast, others might be more technically inclined. Nigeria should use native languages to teach primary school children right from the first day in school. With many native languages, autonomous regions with different official languages will be ideal, with an option for international classes which are more English focused. 2. CURRICULUM: Unless we are really oblivious, there is no way a Nigerian primary 6 student can compete with my primary 2 students. These are kids that first came to our school so tiny and sometimes crying, many of them don’t even know how to write their names. A Nigerian taught them most of what they know today in less than 2 years, and because we have a curriculum that is modern, targets what the students really need to know, and its always modified to reflect their realities, they have acquired so much knowledge about how the world around them works like electricity, engines, space, aerodynamics, mechanics and environmental protection in a short time. What they are learning is directly linked to where their economy is headed, so by the time they are in university, they can easily understand advanced practical and theoretical knowledge and be useful to their economic development after graduation. Our curriculums in Nigeria are old and mostly useless to the growth of our economy, so let’s do the needful. Don’t wait for miracles to change them for you. We must demand this change. 3. GROUP WORK: Students are encouraged to work in groups, divide tasks and roles and they mentored to understand their strengths and challenges and resolve conflicts. They learn to work with others who are different from them, giving them a diverse perspective and mindset about working together. Nigeria cannot succeed without all of us uniting and learning to work with each other, irrespective of tribe, religion, region and family background. When we win as individuals, we will still be surrounded by helpless people, but when we win as a society, everyone develops. 4. TEACHERS: Here in China, we are always happy and encouraged to learn new things and ways to teach our students. We are free from worrying about food, shelter and pocket money. We are paid more than enough, so we have enough time and mental space to throughly research information and knowledge, and also design useful and interesting lessons for our students. Nigerian teachers should be paid a minimum of 800k to 1 million Naira per month. Primary school teachers lay down the crucial foundations for our economic growth, development and future. It is one of the most important professions in the country and the compensation and benefits MUST be more than senators and representatives. Liking, commenting and retweeting are nice because they help spread the message, however what’s more important is us uniting as Nigerians with our common interest to ensure that our needs are addressed.

That is, Coach Taylor “Teej” Johannesson of H.J. Cody High School. I taught my Primary 2 students using LED to detect counterfeit money. The students assembled LED light circuits and tested them on real money. These kids are 8 years old, and they arrived at my class when they were 6 and knew almost nothing. Our children in Nigeria are not different, but the kind of foundational education given to them is completely different from This is what Nigeria can take away from this: 1. LANGUAGE: Using Chinese language to explain LED circuits was so easy for them to understand, and took less than 6 mins. They never have to worry about understanding the grammar or remembering new vocabulary if another language was used. Humans have different abilities, and language acquisition is a skill that’s not evenly distributed. While you or your son can learn a new language fast, others might not be strong in language, but really good in science and technology. Nigeria should use native languages to teach primary school children right from the first day of school. With many native languages, autonomous regions with different official languages should be the best direction, with an option for international classes that is more English focused. Build local economies first before looking outward to setting up economies that are national or international. 2. CURRICULUM: If you don’t change with time, time will leave you behind. Nigeria’s future is left behind because of outdated curricula right from primary to tertiary. The world has moved on a long time ago, and we must wake up to reality and realize that the output of our educational system doesn’t help our economic growth. We don’t have major local industries, inventions, breakthroughs because what students learn doesn’t fit the current reality. What is Nigeria’s stage when it comes to industrialization? Is Nigeria a baby, toddler or teenager? Then her education output should be a balanced diet that will aid her growth for the next 5-10 years, and the curriculum is the structure that ensures that. With the way the world is changing so fast, the curriculum should be reviewed and adjusted annually. This is what we do. My students first came to our school so tiny, many of them don’t know how to even write their names. We taught them most of what they know today, and because we have a curriculum that is modern, targets what the students really need to know, and its always modified to reflect their realities, they have acquired so much knowledge about how the world around them works like electricity, engines, space, aerodynamics, mechanics and environmental protection in a short time Miracles and prayers alone will not come from heaven to correct our future. It’s now or we will always be the laughing stock of the world. 3. GROUP WORK: North, south, east, west, these kids are from all parts of the country. We train them to work together, and show them how their country is becoming better everyday by group work; how many sectors, companies, organizations, groups, tribes work together as a team to achieve goals that benefits everyone at a personal level. In Chinese, we always tell them to “He Zuo 合作” which means cooperate. They are learning that at a young age, so when they get old, they know that the value of cooperation far exceeds the benefits of sentiments and bigotry to their economic well being and national future. 4. TEACHERS: Teachers should earn more than law makers and governors. This is how it is in any sane and developed society. When you pay teachers well, the best brains and minds in your society will occupy schools and universities, and will inspire the next generation of inventors, businessmen and women, artists and professionals. Don’t be proud to say that you are paying your qualified primary school teachers minimum wage, it’s pathetic. I love miracles as much as I love working hard. If I have a choice, I’ll rather work hard while others wait for miracles. Nigerian’s need to adopt a mentality of working hard and being consistent.

They never have to worry about understanding the grammar or remembering new vocabulary if another language was used. Humans have different abilities, and language acquisition is a skill that’s not evenly distributed. While you or your son can learn a new language fast, others might not be strong in language, but really good in science and technology. Nigeria should use native languages to teach primary school children right from the first day of school. With many native languages, autonomous regions with different official languages should be the best direction, with an option for international classes that is more English focused. Build local economies first before looking outward to setting up economies that are national or international. 2. CURRICULUM: If you don’t change with time, time will leave you behind. Nigeria’s future is left behind because of outdated curricula right from primary to tertiary. The world has moved on a long time ago, and we must wake up to reality and realize that the output of our educational system doesn’t help our economic growth. We don’t have major local industries, inventions, breakthroughs because what students learn doesn’t fit the current reality. What is Nigeria’s stage when it comes to industrialization? Is Nigeria a baby, toddler or teenager? Then her education output should be a balanced diet that will aid her growth for the next 5-10 years, and the curriculum is the structure that ensures that. With the way the world is changing so fast, the curriculum should be reviewed and adjusted annually. This is what we do. My students first came to our school so tiny, many of them don’t know how to even write their names. We taught them most of what they know today, and because we have a curriculum that is modern, targets what the students really need to know, and its always modified to reflect their realities, they have acquired so much knowledge about how the world around them works like electricity, engines, space, aerodynamics, mechanics and environmental protection in a short time Miracles and prayers alone will not come from heaven to correct our future. It’s now or we will always be the laughing stock of the world. 3. GROUP WORK: North, south, east, west, these kids are from all parts of the country. We train them to work together, and show them how their country is becoming better everyday by group work; how many sectors, companies, organizations, groups, tribes work together as a team to achieve goals that benefits everyone at a personal level. In Chinese, we always tell them to “He Zuo 合作” which means cooperate. They are learning that at a young age, so when they get old, they know that the value of cooperation far exceeds the benefits of sentiments and bigotry to their economic well being and national future. 4. TEACHERS: Teachers should earn more than law makers and governors. This is how it is in any sane and developed society. When you pay teachers well, the best brains and minds in your society will occupy schools and universities, and will inspire the next generation of inventors, businessmen and women, artists and professionals. Don’t be proud to say that you are paying your qualified primary school teachers minimum wage, it’s pathetic. I love miracles as much as I love working hard. If I have a choice, I’ll rather work hard while others wait for miracles. Nigerian’s need to adopt a mentality of working hard and being consistent.
