@S_OkudzetoAblak Few months ago, he was an opposition MP with oversight responsibilities in Parliament — something he took to heart. And now he’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. It’s just unfortunate that no other MP is willing to continue his work. Maybe we should petition JDM to re-assign him.

The Chinese ambassador to Ghana has dismissed allegations that Chinese nationals are responsible for illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in Ghana. He described such claims as unfounded and asserted that his compatriots should not be held accountable for the growing challenges associated with galamsey. According to the ambassador, the Chinese individuals involved in illegal mining were invited into the country by Ghanaians themselves, and therefore, the focus should be on those who facilitated their entry rather than blaming the Chinese community.

I like how he highlighted Galamsey. For anyone who’s new or doesn’t know about Galamsey. Galamsey basically means illegal mining. It happens in the Ashanti region, Central, Eastern and Western region, among others. It basically means mining without a license, often carried out in rivers , forests and other protected areas. The consequences of galamsey are serious because it leads to water pollution, destruction of farmlands, and loss of biodiversity. Mercury and cyanide, chemicals often used in the process, contaminate rivers and waterbodies, making them unsafe for drinking and farming. Many communities rely on the water from these rivers that are contaminated. Water treatments centers are shutting down due to the inability to filter the contaminated water. Babies are being born with birth defects, and there’s been a rise in kidney failure and other health related cases. Aside from the health and environmental impacts, Galamsey has severe social consequences. Some children are trafficked into illegal mining operations, often working in dangerous conditions for long hours. Galamsey is an ecosystem consisting of various actors that sustain its operations. This was the state of River pra in 2016, under John Dramani Mahama, Hon. Dompreh Was absolutely right. The NDC destroyed our water bodies than anyone. I didn’t want the galamsey fight to be politicized but yesterday on the floor of parliament, Cassiel Ato Forson (PhD) politicized it when he tried to put across that, this NPP Government has supervised the destruction of our water bodies, thankfully, Hon. Dompreh being very familiar with what actually happened under John Mahama argued that, it’s a total lie to say we’ve destroyed more water bodies because John Mahama and his NDC destroyed the water bodies than what’s happening under this current Government. The sad part is, under NDC nothing was done to stop galamsey but under NPP, galamseyers were arrested and some galamsey equipments burned to ashes but sadly, NDC on the hand goes to promise these galamseyers to vote against NPP because they (NDC) will let them do more galamsey to destroy our water bodies even more, NDC has politicized galamsey and that’s why we’ve still not being able to fully win against the galamsey fight.

Ghana Water Company and Ghana Resources Commission data clearly shows that the turbidity levels of our waters, though still beyond the WHO standards in 2016, the got historically worse when the NPP took over power. Until late 2022, there was no mining activity in our restricted Forest Reserves until Chairman Wontumi's Akonta mining started Galamsey there, as the EPA Report, Frimpong Boateng, and Erastus Asare Donkor reports revealed. Ex-president Akuffo Addo, being complicit and a beneficiary of Galamsey, in a speech cleared Wontumi of any crimes and supported Akonta mine's illegal invasion of our forest reserves, destroying our water bodies and lands. In order to affirm his complicity and benefit from Galamsey, he signed L.I 2642 that legitimized Chairman Wontumi's illegal mining in the forest reserves, which gave him the locus to allocate more of the lands to himself and lease them to Chinese and other illegal miners to further degrade our waters and forests. At this same time, Dr. Bawumia brought the "Gold Purchase Program and Gold for oil policies," which was heavily dependent on buying gold from small-scale miners and Galamseyers like Akonta mining and his cronies, and to fulfill the greedy agenda of "PARTY HIA SIKA" that was exposed in the Frimpong Boateng leaked tape. The bar for scandals has been dropped so low under the NDC government that, the issues that were seen as scandals under the NPP government have now been normalized. It tells you how bad the situation is. Long before now, it has always been public knowledge how this government has normalized Galamsey. This is the situation of the Ayensu River running through the Mankrong and Kwanyarko communities. These innocent citizens have never experienced their river polluted to this level. The water treatment plant is shut down as a result and about 11 districts in the central region have no access to potable water. The women have to fetch this water sometimes and cook the water for hours before they can drink. Painful part is, they do no mining in these communities. They are only suffering the impact of mining from 100s of kilometers away. This NDC Government won the 2024 elections largely on the back of Galamsey and the inability of the NPP government to win the fight. I always insisted the NDC were enabling Galamsey the reason it became a difficult fight for the NPP. Today, the situation is worst, our water bodies have been invaded 3times fold and it’s deteriorating at an alarming rate. We call on government to quickly fulfil the promises made to the people. They were just a 6 promises. At least they shld implement this and fail then we know they have made the efforts. For now, they deny the situation is worst, they are buying gold from the Galamseyers, their party people in some areas are leading the onslaught on our river bodies, The government has a laid back attitude to the fight and simply doing the same things already in place when they took office. There is little hope at the moment and we are counting of the NDC government to change this. #GalamseyEnablers
