FIDEL CASTRO ON SLAVERY AND COLONIALISM On this day, Cuban revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara overthrew the U.S backed Batista dictatorship in 1959. We remember Fidel Castro as a Cuban revolutionary, an icon of the Global South, and a tireless fighter against Western imperialism. His revolution did not stop at Cuba’s shores. Castro understood liberation not as charity but as duty. From Havana to Luanda, from the Caribbean to Southern Africa, he matched words with action. In the mid-1970s, more than 36,000 Cuban soldiers answered the call of Angola’s newly independent government, fighting alongside them against U.S.-backed rebels and the apartheid regime of South Africa. The stakes were high, and Angola’s sovereignty was defended, and the very foundations of apartheid were shaken. Castro’s commitment went beyond arms. He sent doctors, engineers and educators to nations across Africa, Latin America and Asia whenever colonialism had left scars, shortages and abandoned communities. In moments like the one captured in this clip, Castro spoke not just to Cubans but to the descendants of the colonised everywhere. He honoured Africa’s centuries of sacrifice, the lives and labour stolen through slavery and empire. And he reminded the world of the quiet strength and historic burden carried by the Global South.
