California: During the most critical part of wildfire operations on the Bain Fire in Riverside County this afternoon, air operations were shut down due to a civilian drone flying over the fire. (Audio attached) This was at a time that structures were under threat, as well as lives of both civilians and firefighters. They had multiple tankers working the fire on a “no divert” for life safety, and some idiot flew their drone over the fire likely hindering protection of both life and property. The suspect was detained and taken into custody. (Audio attached) It’s impressive to hear just how fast this operation took place, and the professionalism involved. Last year, California had 186 drone incursions over fires, over 75% of those led to the halting of, or delaying of aviation operations over active wildfires. It’s a major problem. Out of control fires are raging not just in Europe but in the UK. Thousands of homes have been evacuated, some have burned to the ground. Landscapes and habitats have been destroyed, possibly irrevocably, and heartbreakingly deaths have occurred. Reports have come in of Greek firefighters losing their lives trying to extinguish wildfires on the island of Crete. How can anyone ignore these events and advocate ideological policies for the UK uplands that directly increase wildfire risk? IF you didn't know, that's exactly what's happening. Yes we know, its utterly bewildering. Wildfire is a very real and growing threat here in the UK, we shouldn't need anymore evidence - its happening right now. These fires need only two things - fuel and an ignition source. The imposed land policies in place for the uplands are providing that fuel, all that's needed is the ignition and there is an increasing list of possibilities where that ignition will come from. Arguments can rage about how fires start but they all share one common denominator - FUEL. Currently in the UK we have landscape policy makers at DEFRA and NE who have absolutely no knowledge of working in the rural sector, particularly in the uplands. They have no practical, hands-on experience of actually managing vegetation or mitigating against wildfires and they certainly do not have any skills or expertise in fighting them. So why is there no collaborative engagement between the boots on the ground personnel and those in the government offices? Answers on a post card please. #autofire; The Auto Fire is now at 50% containment and 61 acres. Overnight, firefighter addresses small, isolated flare ups and stubborn pockets of heat across the fire perimeter. The fire remains static in its original footprint with no anticipated growth. Today, firefighters continue patrolling and reinforcing containment lines as well as addressing deep seated smoldering brush piles well inside the perimeter. Resources from VCFD and Ventura City Fire include Type 3 and Type 6 engines, a hand crew, water tender and one of our UAS / Drone pilots. Firefighters will remain on scene until this fire is fully contained. An IR flight of the fire by one of our UAS / Drone pilots shows the pockets of heat firefighters are working to address. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
