An investigation by the Israel Defense Forces into last month's deadly clash in the West Bank village of Tell has found that the hike by Israeli settlers in the area was not coordinated or approved by the army, despite efforts by the military to obtain details about the trek. According to the probe, the military's Samaria Regional Brigade was made aware in the evening hours of July 23 of a hike planned by Israeli settlers in the area the following morning. However, the army was unable to obtain details on the route or the organizers, the military says. The hike was therefore not coordinated with the army or approved by it. A military official says that in any case, the hike through areas A and B of the West Bank, including in a Palestinian village, would not have received approval. On July 24, at 5:30 a.m., the hike began from the settlement of Har Bracha, located in Area C of the West Bank. Dozens of settlers, including minors and two off-duty soldiers, entered Area B, then briefly entered Area A, before heading back to Area B again as they made their way toward the settlement of Havat Gilad.
