First Blood (1982) is a quiet, bruised character study disguised as an action movie. The sequels rewrote Rambo as mythic muscle, and history keeps mistaking the original for something it never was.

One of Hollywood’s worst habits is taking an action film with something to say and reducing it to spectacle. FIRST BLOOD (1982) is about the treatment of veterans after war. The sequels shifted the focus toward ever-bigger body counts.

DEVELOPING: James Franco is joining the cast of the Rambo prequel film. Set years before the events of 1982's First Blood, Franco is not Rambo, but rather the heavy. Noah Centineo will walk in Stallone’s footsteps as John Rambo. Stallone was nearly perfect here- hard to recreate.

Did you know? Golden Axe (1989) features iconic death screams that were actually sampled directly from the 1982 movie First Blood. Creator Makoto Uchida was obsessed with 80s action cinema and used the Rambo audio to give the arcade combat a more gritty and realistic punch.

Rambo: First Blood (1982) had an early cut that ran nearly 3 & a half hours, packed with extra dialogue and one liners. Stallone hated it so much he wanted to buy the negatives and destroy them. What survived is the leanest, most grounded Rambo.

FIRST BLOOD has often been misremembered because of its sequels. People forget that the original film is a smart, hard-hitting character piece. An unflinching and unflattering portrait of so many elements of American society. The casting is impeccable, top to bottom. The screenwriting is top-notch. This scene is a prime example. The insincere smile, the veiled threats. The contained anger. The action may be a little tame by today's standards, but it's not really an action film. It's a drama, with action. In the end, it's hard to see it as anything other than a tragedy. An angry rebuke to the arrogance of power and how most of us just want to look the other way. It still fascinates me how we can tell such entertaining stories about these things. I love this movie. The sequels are just entirely different things (I liked #4.)

John Rambo wasn't supposed to be sympathetic. In David Morrell's novel First Blood, Rambo is a cold-blooded killer. Psychotic. Dangerous. The book ends with him deadshot by his own creator, Colonel Trautman. Sylvester Stallone read the script and refused to play that version. He saw something else. Not a monster. A victim. A man created by war... 🎬 First Blood (1982)

The Incredible Hulk from 1982 was one of my favourite cartoons as a kid. Great character design, plenty of Hulk smashing action and a great opening too

First Blood is the world’s introduction to John Rambo & introductions don’t get much more memorable than this film. Sylvester Stallone was somehow able to follow up the success of Rocky with First Blood & a new franchise that carried Stallone decades into the future. Rambo has to be considered one of Cinema’s best action stories. The rewatchability is infinite.

Kids (1995) drifts through New York like a nightmare disguised as summer, sun-bleached streets, aimless days, and the quiet sense that something irreversible is already in motion.

Quentin Taratino said Lawrence Fishburne’s performance in King of New York was so incredible he thought - “he could be the greatest actor of his generation”. He explains: "As great as Christopher Walken is in this movie. To me, it's Larry Fishburne's movie - it was the rock that becomes a diamond aspect of the movie. It's why I could defend this movie against all comers, because to me, Fish's performance in this movie was comparable to a young Brando. It was the most exciting performance by an actor of his generation that I'd seen in a movie of that time. And I thought, well, that's it. There is a new Marlon Brando, and his name is Larry Fishburne - it was amazing, it was mesmerizing… He is the first hip hop gangster in movie history. That character had never been done before this. He invented that character. And he invented it as something to do. It wasn't in the original script. He came up with that himself… The three big Fishburne moments to me, is his opening sequence with…Tito. That's it, with Tito - black glove dude. And his reunion with Frank. And then it's the chicken scene (see below). Those are his three big arias. Not only that though - expressions that I would later hear for the rest of the decade, I actually heard for the first time in that scene. I'd never heard the expression; “I'll slap the black off you” before. That was the first time I heard it when Fish says it to Snipes. I've since heard it many times… And that was actually the first time I ever heard, “fuck you very much”. And I would proceed to hear that for the rest of the 90s. But those were the first times I'd ever heard those expressions… As terrific as he has been in other things - the level of excitement that I had over him when this movie was over, I have never had that excitement again. I thought, with this, he could be the greatest actor of his generation. That was an actual, real fucking thing. He could be the greatest actor of his generation after seeing this." Ice Age (2002) would be remembered much more fondly if it had stayed a standalone. The first film is lean, character driven, and surprisingly dry in its humor. The endless sequels inflated the tone and buried how well that original actually works.
